I will be traveling from Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber to Munich to Verona on a sunday in July. The munich to verona trip requires a reservation. How far in advance should I purchase this? I'd like to wait until I'm in Europe, but will only be in Germany specifically for 3 days before the train. I dont know how quickly trains fill up in peak season.
There are several runs a day from Munich to Verona Porta Nuova. It's a 5.5hr. journey. You can buy these tickets on the German train website (http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml). Being able to purchase on this website, there could be Europa-Spezial Italien special fares available. You didn't post your day of travel but I am looking at Sunday July 19. I see these special fares (53Euro instead of the standard 81.90Euro. The reservation is included with the purchase. If you can nail down your travel date and time, I would suggest picking up this special fare.
Thanks Larry, I'm traveling the 26th. Where did you find the Europa-Spezial Italien? The cheapest fare i see is the savings fare, 106€.
Becky, I can see it also for 7/26. You need to go to www.bahn.de. Once there, select English from the drop down menu from the top/middle. Enter Munich (Muchen in German) and Verona Porta Nuova in the two fields. Use the small calendar to select 7/26. Put in 07:00. (You'll see more trains that way). Once the page comes up, look under Savings Fares and select "Check Availability" for the run you want.
Next, you will have to fill in some "travel data". Number of passengers and ages. Press Refresh when complete. You'll get the "Check Availability" thing again. Click on it again for the run you want. I see that the 53Euro special fare is available for both the 9:31 and 11:30 trains. Proceed with the purchase on the run you want.
I took that train going the other way (actually starting in Milan) and made a reservation two days before with no trouble. This was on a weekday in May, however, and the train was pretty empty. You could probably wait until you're in Europe to get the reservation, however, you might need to be a little flexible with your departure time, since it is a weekend during more of a "high" month. I'd say make a reservation now if you're on a tight schedule, because then you don't have to worry about it - just make sure you don't miss your train! If you're more flexible, though, waiting until you're in Europe would probably be fine.
Becky,
I've travelled that route and normally just buy my reservations a day or so before I'm going to be travelling. Given the wording of your post, I'm assuming you're travelling with a Rail Pass?
A few options you might consider....
Where will you be prior to Rothenburg? If you're landing in Frankfurt, there's a DB office in the airport station so you should be able to purchase the reservation there.
How long will you be in Munich? If you're stopping there for a day or so on the way to Verona, you could take care of the reservation there. I've found the people at the EurAide office in the Munich station to be very helpful, and they would be able to help with the details. You could of course also purchase this at the DB offices in the station.
One point to mention - if you ARE using a Rail Pass, make sure it includes Austria. You'll have to pass through Austria on the way to Verona, so if your pass doesn't include that, you'll have to buy a separate ticket for that portion.
The Kufstein-Brennero portion has some gorgeous scenery, so be sure to keep your Camera at hand.
Happy travels!
"The cheapest fare i see is the savings fare, 106€."
The full fare is €81,90. I've never seen the Savings fare exceed the full fare, but €106 IS 2 x €53. You must have entered two people. Was that what you wanted?
Those Savings fares ARE quantity limited and the price goes up as the lower priced tickets sell out. You should get your tickets as soon as you can commit.
Had you booked earlier than this, you could have gotten that same fare, €53 pP, all the way from Rothenburg to Verona. Those fares have sold out, but I still saw €73 pP fares available. However, those €73 fares include regional trains from Rothenburg to Munich. You could do that part as easily with a €28 Bayern-Ticket (€14 pP, €67 pP total). The only difference is that if your regional trains are late, and you can't make the EC to Verona, those tickets are non-refundable, non-exchangeable. However, if the regional trains are shown on your Savings fare tickets, and they're late, the Bahn will put you on the next available train to Verona, no extra charge.
BTW, don't use "Muchen". That is not Munich in German. Who knows what that will get you? (You might get the right starting station if the Bahn website is feeling generous.) The correct name in German is "München", but "Muenchen" (preferrably Muenchen Hbf) is also acceptable.
