Munich to Switzerland where to go?

My 13 year old daughter and I are planning a trip the end of March beginning of May. We are going from Frankfurt (have family there) to Salzburg for two days. Then Salzburg to Munich for two days. Now here is the problem we would like to go into Switzerland but we only have two days to go. We can only pick one place to go and spend the night because we have to head back up to Frankfurt on the 3rd day. I had picked Lucerne but Meersburg is nice too. I would love to go to southern Switzerland but I don't want to be driving the whole time. I forgot to mention we have a rental car.

Any suggestions of places in the northern part of Switzerland?

Zurich is the northernmost town, but nothing much of interest there. If you can drive that far, I would choose Interlaken for exceptional Alpine scenery. You mention Lucerne and I would choose it second.

What do you want to see in Switzerland? If it's the Alps, you'll see some amazing Alpine scenery between Salzburg and Munich. As others have noted, north east Switzerland is mostly rolling hills and a few cities with not too much to offer to a casual visitor. I don't recommend going to all the way to the Interlaken area at this time of year, because you don't have much time, most of the tourist industry in the mountain towns will be virtually shut down, and this is the time of year with the highest chance of fog cover. If you really want to go to Switzerland, you could look at some of the lake towns on the Bodensee like Romanshorn or Konstanz...or, on the German side of the lake, like Lindau, Friedrickshafen or Ludwigshafen. And on most days, the Alps are clearly visible from the lakeside.

I guess I would spend 3 days in Munich and make a one day side trip to Salzburg (we spent one day in Salzburg and saw as much as we wanted to see). Then add that extra day to Switzerland. If you really want to see the Alps, go to the Berner Oberland (around Interlaken).

The area around the Bodensee is also nice. I would prefer Lindau and Friedrichshafen. There is a Zepplin Museum in Friedrichshafen. I haven't been there, but the island of Mainau, near Konstanz, (which is really in Germany) is supposed to be nice.

The Rheinfalls, in Schafhausen is also supposed to be worth seeing.

I love Switzerland. If you want to see something like Switzerland (gorgeous peaks, Alpine scenery) and not drive so far, try Berchtesgaden, Germany. It is close to Salzburg. I also loved Kitzbuhel, Austria (ski resort).

Are you going in March or May? May is a bit dead in Alpine towns, no snow, just mud.

The official Swiss website, www.myswitzerland.com, is really good. Lots of photos and ideas of places to see.

And not to confuse you too much, Harry and I are talking about the same body of water. Lake Constance = the Bodensee.

Thank you for all the great ideas. We have decided to stay in Lucerne. Then drive to Lake Constance. We are planning a ferry ride and lunch by the lake before heading back to Frankfurt.

This was my first time posting thanks again for all the suggestions.
