This forum is great! I have been following it diligently and would like to pose my own question. My husband and I (late 50s) are flying into Munich and will have 5 nights before meeting friends for an apartment rental in Villefranche sur Mer. I know a lot of people here are rail fans, but every time I look at rail routes and times, it just seems complicated and tedious. We like to drive, and have driven in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey. We are leaning towards renting a car in Munich and keeping it for the whole time. (We leave from Munich and will have another 5 nights to mosey on back after our time in France, but I will post separately when I get to that part.) Here is what I've mapped out. We are very open to other routes, or to reconsider trains, or even to flying to somewhere a little closer (?Zurich) and renting from there. (We are intentionally not actually spending any time in Munich itself.) May 27 - arrive MUC at 2pm. Rent car and skirt Munich, driving to Fussen (about 2 hours). 2 nights in Fussen. May 28 - castles and relax/recover from jet-lag. Possibly see Wieskirche or other area highlights depending on our state. May 29 - drive south through the Engadine Valley to St. Moritz/Pontresina (3 hours). May 30 - Continue on to Varenna on Lake Como for 2 nights. (Option to detour through Bernina Pass to Tirano and back to Lake Como that way if weather is good.) June 1 - boot it to Nice (5-6 hours), since scenery in northern Italy doesn't seem to hold many attractions. Do you think, given that the weather in Switzerland in May is said to be poor, we should go straight from Fussen to Varenna and not bother with the night in the Engadine? Or should we be considering a completely different plan? Thanks!
