Munich to Mittewald, Overammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen

(sorry for the spelling) Anyone know the best way to get to these towns and how long it takes from Munich? We will be staying in Munich but want to visit these outside towns.
How do we get there? And, are they worth seeing? Hope someone can please give me some input... Thanks a bunch!

Not to bad on the spelling. It's Mittenwald and Oberammergau.

Both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald are stops on a train line going to Innsbruck. I takes just an hour and a half to get to GaP, 20 minutes longer to Mittenwald. Before GaP, the train stops at Murnau and it is about a half hour from Murnau to Oberammergau on a spur line.

Are you trying to do all three in a day? If so, there is a bus between the Oberammergau Bahnhof and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof. That might be a faster way between those towns than going back through Murnau.

Trains leave from the Starnberger Flügelbahnhof, tracks 27-36 on the north side of the main station (Hbf) in Munich.

You can get schedules from the German Rail website. Spell the names correctly! If you put in just "Mittenwald", you will get a pulldown menu with a lot of choices. Use "Post/Bahnhof, Mittenwald", or just enter that from the beginning.

Thank You VERY much for the helpful info! Can you tell me what one town out of the three is worth staying over-night for a few days? Hotels?

Which is a better place to visit overnight? Ulm or Mittenwald? I know NOTHING about this, it's like going into outer-space... lol

Of the three, I would probably prefer Oberammergau and Mittenwald. They are little smaller, more intimate. GaP is pretty big. Unless you have something specific in mind to see in GaP, I might skip it. Taking the cog train or the cable car to the top of the Zugspitze, however, would be a good reason to go to Garmisch.

These three towns are serviced entirely (or almost entirely) by regional trains. You can get a Bayern-Ticket for €28 for 2-5 people. It's an all day pass good for unlimited travel on regional trains in Bavaria. The pass is valid from midnight (morning) on weekends, 9 AM on workday mornings, until 3 AM the next morning.

Two years ago, I stayed at Gaestehaus Richter in Oberammergau. Very pleasant, inexpensive, near the Bahnhof and a short walk into town. The website is in German, but she speaks English, would probably answer an English email.

OTOH, in Mittenwald, end of August, I stayed in a Privatzimmer. It was nice enough, but she spoke very limited English (she put up with my bad German). Not sure I would recommend it.

If you stay in Oberammergau as a base, there is a bus from the Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau (castles). It takes about 1h20m.

Which town is nicer? Prettier? and how long from Munich to this area time-wise? You are being VERY helpful! Thanks.

Mittenwald and Ulm are very different. Ulm is a pretty big city. As far as I know, the most interesting thing in Ulm is the church. The tower is about 600 ft tall and the tallest Gothic tower in the world. You can climb up the inside for a view of the Alps (on a clear day).

You can also climb the church tower at St. Peters. in Munich (just off Marienplatz) for a view of Munich and maybe the Alps.
