We plan to travel to Innsbruck Austria from Munich Germany since the fare is better. Staying in Munich a few nights. Would we be able to get to a B&B near the train station from the airport? We have never traveled outside Italy so I feel nervous. Our plan is to fly into Munich and out of Rome by train and bus, does this sound sensible? Munich, Innsbruck, Bolzano and down? Any suggestions would be appreciated, this all started with wanting to see the Dolomites on our next trip to Italy. Thanks
Jo, Your Itinerary sounds very workable. It would help to have some idea of the time frame that you're working with? I'd suggest more than "a few nights" in Munich if possible. There's a LOT to see there and good possibilities for day trips (including Neuschwanstein and Dachau, if you're interested in the history of those places). For your stay in Munich, have a look at Hotel Uhland. It's not too far from the station (about a 15-minute walk) but located in a nice residential area. The rooms are comfortable, breakfasts awesome and the staff are wonderful. Happy travels!
I took the train from Innsbruck over Brenner pass to Fortezza a few years ago. For someone from the Rockies, the scenery was pleasant but ho-hum. From Fortezza I couldn't see the Dolomites; not sure you can see them from the train line through the Alto Adige. Munich is easy to get around in - airport to Hbf. I went past Uhland a few years ago, as I walked from the Hbf to the Oktoberfest grounds. It's a nice looking place in a nice neighborhood. But it's a little pricey for me. €67 single is not so bad, but more than I pay. It's the "bis €158" that bothers me. There are often trade shows and "Messe" in Munich. Get a quote from them, then check some others. I've listed several on my website. Royal is less expensive and close to the station, but the neighborhood, if that really matters, is a little less nice. There are several less expensive places around Marienplatz. Since the Munich to Italy ECs stop at Muenchen Ost, you could take the S-Bahn from Marienplatz to Ostbahnhof and catch it there.
Thanks Ken and Lee, We have 21 days mid Sept. "12" to travel not counting the flights. Once I get the distance in perspective we can decide how long to stay. Being able to see more of Germany would be wonderful. I'm sure the view from the train traveling into Italy is what I was hoping to see anyway.
I took a picture from the train of an alpine town on the Austrian side of Brenner Pass, then another picture on the Italian side coming back.
Thanks for the Pics, what month?
