We are arriving at Munich Hbf from Salzburg on a morning train around mid September and will make our way to the Dachau Concentration Camp and points north (overnight that night in Rothenburg) with a rental car I have reserved at the Munich Hbf. However, I'm having second thoughts about getting out of Munich with the car from the station. We have driven around both France and Italy (mostly rural), and are completely fine with big city driving in North America, but now questioning my decision about picking up the car at Hbf and driving out of the city. Any advice?
I don't think you will have a problem driving from the train station. I didn't anyway. Will you have a GPS? By the way, driving in Germany is easier than Italy for sure!!
Save yourself the cost of a car that day. Getting to and from Dachau with public transportation is a breeze. See my webpage for instructions on getting to the Memorial.
Thanks Andrea and Lee. I have nothing against taking a train and bus to the Dachau CC from Munich Hbf but 1) I was having difficulty figuring out if was the Dachau Stadt or Dachau Bahn station where one would catch the bus to the Dachau CC (thanks Lee for clarifying on your website that it is the Bahn), and 2) our car rental company only has a city pickup location, nothing at the Dachau train station, so it's a little more work to find that location and make our way there then north to Rothenburg later that day.
Sorry Andrea....missed your GPS question. Yes, we will have one.
This might surprise you, but there are also trains from Dachau station to Rothenburg. If you come in from Salzburg using a Bayern-Ticket, you can also use it for all the conveyances of MMV (Munich metro district), including the S-Bahn from the Hbf to Dachau Station and the bus round-trip to the Memorial. After returning to Dachau station from the Memorial, you can catch the next train to Rothenburg (there are three or four connections every hour), also using the Bayern-Ticket to go to Rothenburg. No need to spend time getting at a car rental office; no need for GPS.
You will be easily manage getting out of the city with a GPS. We just did this a few months ago. We were heading to the Neuchwanstein area but it was an easy hop over to the highway. Also, one tip with your GPS, ours took awhile to find a signal so we ended up using one of our iphones to figure out the first few turns out of the city. Turn your GPS on and get it going to the first location before picking up your car. Once you get to your car you will probably be in a parking garage thus the difficulty picking up a signal. Just stop before you go into the structure, get it all set up and you will be good to go!
