This is my first European trip, and I am scheduled for a 9:30 tour at the BMW Factory. Looking at the train schedules it appears that I will have to leave Munich very early and transfer trains. Also, does anyone know the station that I need to get off at for the BMW Factory? Any advice in making this trip will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I don't remember the exact time it takes, but I did the tour 2 years ago and the subway ride was only about 15-20 minutes from Marienplatz.
Directions including the exact stop you need are easy to get; go to http://www.bmw-welt.com which is the BMW factory and visitor center website, click on "English" at the bottom, then click on "directions and parking"
Thank you, Mike. I'm a little nervous about all of this since I haven't travelled to Europe before and it will be winter.
If you're staying in the main part of Munich you don't need to take any trains, just the subway. Give yourself some extra time to buy a ticket in the station (you can buy them ahead of time if you're already in Munich). It might sound intimidating to ride public transit since many people in the US aren't used to doing it, but its not hard to do. Here is a link that my help: http://europeforvisitors.com/munich/articles/u-bahn-s-bahn.htm I would suggest arriving at the Welt 15 minutes early to give yourself time to find the desk, get signed in, etc (the tours start there, or at least they did 2 years ago). The Welt is literally 10 yards from the subway exit, so there's no problem with getting lost :-)
Last month I was in Munich and went to the BMW Welt and it is at the same U-bahn stop as the Olympic Park. I'd pretty sure the factory is in the same area. Very easy to get to and very efficient public transportation!
The BMW factory is just across the street from the U-Bahn station. The other poster is correct, you get off at the Olympic Site station. Ask your hotel for the correct subway stop. Plan about 30 minutes for travel.
My son and I took this tour last year. It was great! So interesting to watch the cars being built from metal to finish.
While we waited for the tour to begin, there was a guy on a motorcycle riding up and down the stairs. There are BMW motorcycles for you to see, and you can sit on them too (upstairs) A Formula 1 car, as well as a gift shop all await you to enjoy. There is also a cafe if you need a drink/coffee, snack (pretty pricey, but convenient)
The tour took @2+ hours. Wear very comfortable shoes, there is no sitting down at all, you will be on your feet.
After the BMW factory tour, you can also tour the museum. It's across from the factory, easy to reach via a bridge. We didn't do this, the factory tour was enough for the day.
After the tour we walked around the Olympic Park. I'd been there in 1976, it is in terrible shape now. The buildings are being renovated, or torn down, hard to tell which! But I enjoyed reliving that experience with my son.
Here is the map of the S-Bahn/U-Bahn system in Munich.
The Olympiazentrum U-Bahn station is just above the middle of the page. It's a stop on the U3 line that goes under Marienplatz. U-Bahn trains run every 5 min and the trip takes 12 min.
If you're coming from the Hauptbahnhof, take the U2 to Scheidplatz and change there to the U2 line, Richtung (direction) OEZ. Looks like a change of platforms is required. Olympiazentrum is the second stop after the change.
A one way ticket (1 zone) would be €2,40. If you buy a Single-Tageskarte (day ticket) for the Innenraum for €5,20 it will cover the round trip from anywhere in the inner zone plus any other conveyances in the inner zone of the MVV that day.
