Munich/Salzburg/Bavaria by train??

We are looking at traveling a bit around bavaria/Salzburg/Munich by train, we are staying in Munich and have 6 days, any sort of itinerary to see some countryside, castles and Dachau is a must for us. We are a couple is the Bayern ticket our best bet? Which spots on the romantic road a must sees? Traveling at the end of March so will some thiings be closed or reduced hours? I know this is a lot of questions, thank you anyone for some advice!

There is so much to see in Bavaria that in only six days you'll have to prioritize. For the Romantic Road, I would definitely see Fuessen and the castles at the southern end. Nearby, Oberammergau is nice and close to Ludwig's little palace at Linderhof. Wuerzburg is considered the northern terminus of the Road. I liked Marienberg fortress. There is also the Residenz. Nearby Rothenburg ob der Tauber is, off course, one of the most visited towns in Bavaria. South of there, Noerdlingen is a much less touristy town, much like Rothenburg but without a Christmas shop or C&P Museum. It has a wall you can walk around most of the town. Also in the area are Bamberg and Nuernberg. You can see a lot of countryside from the train, but if you want a particularly scenic road, take the train south to Kochel, then the bus to Mittenwald. If you have time for an overnight side trip, go to Berchtesgaden. It's a perfect place to hike and for spectacular scenic views. That's just a few high points. Bavaria has 12 km of rail for every 100sq km of area and over 1000 stations, so there aren't many places you can't get to by train. What isn't accessible by train is probably accessible by bus. The Bayern-Ticket covers both regional trains and buses. RVO has an extensive network of bus routes in Bavaria south of Munich. The German Rail website shows both train and bus connections.

We have traveled by train, primarily in Bayern, 6 times in recent years and really enjoyed it. I would try to limit the distance traveled in 6 days. If you are flying in/out of Munich I would keep to limit myself to short trips, perhaps to Munich, Salzburg and Füssen (Neuschwanstein, etc.). The Bayern Ticket would work well. If you fly into Frankfurt and out of Munich (or the reverse) I would probably do Munich, Regensburg, Würzburg. Würzburg has a castle, my favorite, and an Archbishop's residence, more my wife's cup of tea. A day trip to Rothenburg from Würzburg is also possible. Regensburg is a Unesco world heritage site for its medieval buildings. The Bayern ticket would work for all connections, except near Frankfurt. I think your time is too limited to do much of the Romantic Road. I would focus on one end or the other. Regards, Gary

Thank so much for the advice, we are actually flying into London (5 days) chunnel? to Paris (5 days) perhaps overnight train to Munich then 7 days with the last being travel home from Munich, I have however founf flights into Vienna cheaper than taking the night line?? Then coming up to Munich from Austria? Only things set in stone are the amount of days and inbound/outbound flight.

Forget the night train or the plane. With sufficient advance purchase, you can get a Europa-Spezial fare online from the Bahn for one of the daytime TGV/ICE connections between Paris and Munich in just over 6 hours for €39/P. Since the fastest, least expensive fare from Vienna to Munich is €29, also with advance purchase, and takes 4 hours, the Vienna connection is hardly viable.

Here is my itinerary for late March. We arrive early into Dusseldorf and plan to take high speed train to Wurzburg. Then we go to Bamberg, Nurnberg, Salzberg, and Munich and fly home from there. Two nights in Nurnberg and Munich and one night everywhere else. Dates - arrive 31 Marcch and depart 7 April.
