Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna

I'm leaving next week for 10 days and I think I have everything pretty well organized. Are there any sites or activities that you wished you had skipped or were not worth the time or effort?

We enjoyed wandering all three cities (transportation passes were a good deal in Munich and Vienna (especially for above-ground trams). The only thing I would suggest is that in Vienna you see either the Hofburg or Schoobrum but not both (somewhat repetative) - I'd recommend Schoobrum, though you might want to do the treasury at the Hofburg and definitely wander around the outside. Walking is good in all three cities.

Marte- I was in Salzburg in July 0f 2005. Absolutely beautiful! The train system makes travel work on so many levels. We are going back this July. Two places to re-visit are Wolfgangsee (a bus tour from Salzburg to the Mountain and Lake district) and the Eagle's nest in Bertchesgaten, Germany (also available as a bus tour from Salzburg). This time I plan to discover new 'don't miss places!

Have a wonderful time! I know that I can't wait to get there.

In Vienna Schoenbrunn palace is great to visit as long as you get there around 9am before the hordes of tour buses. Go for the full room tour. The grounds are excellent to wander in as well. The Hofburg is great and I don't believe it is anything at all like Schoenbrunn, contrary to what the first poster has said. The Kunsthistorisches museum is nearby full of wonderful art. Stop off over on Wollzeille at Cafe Diglas for a Kaffee or some good wine and watch the world go by. Enjoy!

PS: Buy a 72 hr transit pass in Vienna (around 12 euro) not the Vienna card (not worth the extra $) The pass gives you unlimited access to U-bahn, bus, trams, and some S-bahn. Stop by the Spatzennest off Burgasse for some of the best traditional Austrian fare. Avoid Grinzing; if you want authentic Heurigers (the famous Austrian wine taverns) go to Nussdorf or Sievering.
