We will be in Munich for a short stay (1 1/2 days) and are wondering how much time we should devote to the Residenz. This is our first trip to Munich.

It depends on a variety of factors: how much you like to really absorb each display, whether you're just touring the Residenz or also the Treasury, etc. However, the two times I've been there, I've allowed for about three hours and been pretty satisfied.
Have fun, and allow yourself to be amazed by the fact that large pieces of it were destroyed in WWII and rebuilt.
