Munich Reaidenz or Schloss Nymphenburg or both?

Hi folks. Wondering if it is worth it to try and see both palaces or if one or the other is about the same experience. If so which do you prefer? We're staying closer to the Residenz but happy to explore further.
Thanks!

I saw both in 1988. I've gone back to Nymphenburg once since then. I've never gone back to the Residenz. Does that say anything? What I remember about the Residenz is a seemingly unending progression of Rococo buildings with murals painted on the walls and ceiling. Nymphenburg had a park-like setting and was a little more appealing, overall. On the other hand, if you are in downtown Munich, the Residenz is more accessible.

I found the Residenz to be an enjoyable place to visit. In the great hall, the archways over the many windows are decorated with paintings from the 1500's that show a hundred Bavarian villages as they appeared at that time. In the outdoor grotto, every surface is covered with colorful shells taken from the waters of Bavaria. This grotto was actually destroyed during WW2, but when it was being reconstructed, Bavarians who might not have money to help were at least able to contribute shells. Some of the bones in the Reliquary are said to be from St. John the Baptist, though visitors can choose whether or not to believe this claim. The chapel is striking, and was the site of King Ludwig's wedding. Afterward, the wedding reception was such a hit that it became an annual tradition, now known as Oktoberfest. The Halls of Nibelungen are covered with mythological murals said to have inspired Wagner to write his Ring operas. The hallway with all of the portraits document the longest-ruling family in Europe. Mozart premiered one of his operas in the theater. And there are an impressive amount of jewels and crowns in the Treasury. A visitor probably needs to have advance knowledge of the Residenz history to get the most out of their visit.
