Munich--One Afternoon, Night--Early Morning Flight--Where To Stay

I am not necessarily looking for a specific hotel, but an area or general ideas. On a Sunday, we will be arriving in Munich from Salzburg (and have flexibility as far as time of arrival). We have Monday morning a very early morning flight to Amsterdam for a connecting flight to the US (the reason for Munich is to catch the flight--it just works out that way). We would like to see at least a bit of Munich and have a good meal Sunday evening.

Where would you stay? The central city and make arrangements to get Monday morning to the airport early? An airport hotel? Somewhere else? An issue is our luggage if we opt for an airport hotel--that is, storing it at the train station (if we can), seeing Munich and then going to our hotel; or going to the airport hotel first, checking in, returning to Munich and then going back to the hotel that night (which seems cumbersome).

Any comments would be appreciated.

A lot might depend on how early you need to get to the airport. From town, the first S-Bahn gets to the airport at 3:57, next one at 4:17, then about every 10 minutes after that. The trip takes about 40 minutes.

On the other hand, there are places to stay in Freising, which is only 17 minutes by bus to the airport. The first bus leaves Freising at 2:45 and arrives at 3:02. They run every 40 minutes after that.

If you want to leave your luggage for a while at the Hauptbahnhof, there are lockers there. They're located off the end of track 26 (NE corner of the shed area).

When we were there last September, we had a very early Monday flight (departed 7 am...had to be to the airport at 5:00). We stayed right in the downtown area of Munich and caught an early morning train to the airport. It went very smoothly and I would probably do that again. We were able to enjoy a day and evening in Munich. My one suggestion: Buy your tickets to the train station when you arrive. We bought them the night before and had a little trouble figuring out the machine. (If I remember right, you need a 4 zone ticket) Because there were lots of people around, someone was able to help us. Monday morning, the place was deserted, everything shut down and we would have been on our own with any problems. Just buy the ticket when you get there, put it away and then validate it right before you get on the train Monday morning.
