Munich on Last Day

Hi,
We will be arriving in Munich on our last day before heading back to the US. We plan on going to Oktober Fest for a while just to look around maybe eat something get a souvenir for someone back home.

What would you recommend doing/seeing that is relaxing for the remainder of the afternoon? I was thinking the English Garden, anything else?

Thanks,
Wendy

The English Garden would be relaxing and they are beautiful. People go nude there - but in the fall, those might be few and far between. I enjoyed watching the surfers on the man-made water wakes.

Most everything people see in Munich centers around Marienplatz, which is a short S-Bahn trip (2 stops) from the Hbf. There you will find the Neues Rathaus (city hall) with the Glockenspiel (playing clock, 11 am), Frauenkirche (the church with the green cupolas which is the symbol of Munich), the Residenz, Viktualienmarkt.

From the north side of the Hbf, you can take the streetcar (#17) out to Schloss Nymphenburg, the summer palace of the Wittelsbachers, with it's extensive park and outbuildings.

You can also take the S-Bahn from the Hbf to Dachau station, where you can catch the bus (well marked) to the memorial, but I don't know if I would call that "relaxing".

When you get to Munich, purchase a "Innenraum Erwachsene Partner Tageskarte (all day transit pass for up to 5 people) for €9,40. That will give you unlimited rides all day on all of the conveyances (U-/S-Bahn, streetcars, and buses) in the inner zone of Munich, which includes everything but Dachau. To include Dachau, get a Munich XXL Erwachsene Partner Tageskarte for €12,30. That will include the S-Bahn (S2) to Dachau station and the RT bus to the memorial.

My wife and I enjoyed walks along the Isar River (near the Deutsches Musemn) in the evening after supper. It was a little handier to our hotel than the Englischer Garten. These are residential areas and folks are out for strolls, bike rides, picnics, soccer, etc. As you will be there in the fall with shorter days, the late afternoon would probably be better.

i would go to dachau. it will move you. i don't think it will depress you. it is easy to get to and the journey is very pretty. once home you will appreciate your life much, much more. i went on a snowy day in february 2003 and can feel it like it was yesterday. have fun, be safe.
