Munich off the grid

My sister and I will be in Munich for two days just after Oktoberfest ends on October 6. Lodging prices in Munich are still overheated, at least for the early part of that week, so we booked a place in Dachau. Now I'm wondering about using Airbnb to find a small apt or room with bath in Munich proper. I would like to stay outside of the Innenstadt area, but am unfamiliar with the outlying neighborhoods so the listings don't mean much to me. We don't care about super-hip or trendy areas, lean more towards attractive, greener surroundings with easy access to public transportation. Would some parts of Schwabing fit that description? How about the streets to the south of the Englischer Garten? Any other suggestions?

If you want lots of green, you can consider an area around the Olympiapark. It's a fairly modern area (could be a good or bad thing, depending on your tastes), but plenty of open fields and trees. I rode a bike to this area because I figured the hills in the parkland could afford me a good vista to answer a question I had always wondered about- namely, on a clear day, can you see the Alps from Munich? The answer- Yes, you can!

If you're looking for greener surroundings, try staying anywhere near the English gardens or head over across the Isar to Haidhausen. Here's a list of some of the nicer, more central neighborhoods where you should be aiming: Altstadt, Schwabing, Maxvorstadt, Lehel, Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt/Glockenbachviertel, Haidhausen, Bogenhausen, and maybe Neuhausen Just make sure you're apartment is located somewhere near an U-bahn or Tram stop. Even from fairly far out, if you're on an U-bahn line, it only takes a few minutes to get into the city.
