Octoberfest starts 9/22/2012. If we are in Munich 9/13 to 9/18 will it be more crowded than usual? Or are we early enough to miss the Octoberfest rush? I am traveling with my older parents and am a little concerned about them in big crowds.

We went to Oktoberfest in 2010 and besides at the train station and the fair grounds, Munich did not seem any more crowded than it was when I was there in July 2006. You will be there before Oktoberfest, so you shouldn't have any problems.

Exactly. Even during Oktoberfest, except for the train station and down to the fairgrounds Munich doesn't seem any more crowded than usual.

we will be in germany sept 11. we were told that octoberfest starts sept 10 - oct 15. hotel rates are exorbitant, so we had to work around the dates. we will be in munich oct 15. i suggest you email some hotels in munich and ask them about the schedule and hotel rates.

Having been to the Oktoberfest 16 times so far, the biggest crowds that I had to deal with are the train station, subway, and the fest grounds. The surge of people are at their highest on the weekends. The downtown area can get congested too; especially around the Marienplatz. Another highlight downtown is the Hofbrau Haus, but it too can get just as crowded as an Oktoberfest tent! As a side note, the Oktoberfest starts the third Saturday of September and ends the first weekend in October.... every year. Gute reise! Patty
