Munich, neuschwanstein, zugspitze, salzburg, Hallstatt

My dates are September 27th to October 8th and would like to fit in these 5 points of interests. Get into Munich on the afternoon of the 27th of Sept. Want to ask you how many days would you give Munich/Oktoberfest before moving on. Reading many posts on RS I see that Neuschwanstein is a day trip and could perhaps do a evening of Oktoberfest if I didnt get my fill yet. Would you recomend doing both castles or one over the other? Good camera vantage points and best way to get there? I would even hitch a ride or local bus perhaps? As much of a tourist trap as it is I dont want to be raped on the price of a tour bus and be hit with $$$ for a hour ride. Zugspitze, JA or Nein? Again, another day trip? I ask this because I would like to know how long I would need to book for a place to stay for a "base" while doing all these day trips and try to make travel light and less complex. Checking in and out as little as possible makes it more easy to keep track of everything as well as making it feel a bit more home like. Having a look at the website for Zugspitze I see many different options to book. Really my goal is to take a silly picture on the very top with my lederhosen on. Silly I know, but its something I like. Would you, could you take the train up and the sky tram down or do you think one is better then the other? Both the same price and how long would you spread out the times for your train ticket from Munich. Is this a FULL day of travel and sightseeing to get/see/do Zugspitze? From Munich I plan to do the train to Salzburg or Hallstatt. The train to the boat that takes you across the lake. How much is that, how long will it take and how often does it run? Is there a link on it?
# This post is two parts as it will not allow me to put any more on here. This is post one of two

Would think spending at least one night in either place and making a day trip out of the other city before heading back to Munich..or another spot if time allowed. Just that I must be back by the 8th of Oct. to get my train to Hamburg.
On a side note, I live in Hamburg and have been to many small towns. My girlfriend is from a very cute village, my point is that I have had my share of small places and quaint towns. If there is something special you could share about a place/city/village near by I would be very thankful. I am most interested in photography, WWII, good food, meeting people, locals and tourists alike. A good beer house or an old Abby filled with Trappist monks making great beer and perhaps put me up for a night or two; That would be fine with me. Boat rides, renting a bike, what clubs have you been to in Munich. Beer tents that you have been to..the list goes on but I think I asked all that was on my mind. That is till I hit "Post" then I will think of more ;)

Are you aware of the difficulty of getting into the beer tents at night without a reservation at Oktoberfest? My understanding is you'd better be at the tent you want to go to by 11am on a weekend or 2-3 pm on a weekday if you won't want to wait for hours (or not get in at all). So if you want to do Neuschwanstein and Zugspitze, why not spend a night in Fuessen and do both as the same trip? My understanding is Zugspitze is great in clear weather, rather boring if it's cloudy. Something to keep in mind. I don't know about Hallstatt but you can do Salzburg as a day trip from Munich if you get going early. Some will insist you have to spend the night there, but honestly Salzburg is not that big and you can "see it" in a day. The best WWII site in the area is the Eagle's Nest, which while not technically ever a residence of Hitler does still have some interesting Nazi history as well as fantastic views in good weather. But if you want to do that, it's advisable to overnight in Salzburg to see both the town and the Eagle's Nest. As far as Munich in general, away from the fest, Rick's advice to check out the Heiliggeisttube (crazy little bar) is a fun one, and I had fun in the Glockensviertel although that is the gay part of town so be open minded if you go! Check out the Hofbrauhaus but don't bother eating there, the food is overpriced and not as good as other places (Augusteiner!)
