Munich-Murren by train

My husband & I will be traveling from Munich-Murren next wk. We have been researching on DB Bahn (I think that is the name of the website) & think we found a route. The cost per person is $118,00 EUR if I book it 3 days in advance. I would like to book it early to save some money. We are staying near Old Center Munich. Also, if we do book it now, do we pick up the tickets at the train station or just print out receipt, etc. Munchen Hbf dep 7:17 Zurich arr 11:44 Zurich dep 12:02 Bern arr 12:58 Bern dep 13:04
Interlaken Ost 13:57 Then I believe we can take the mountain lifts from Interlaken Ost (or nearby) up to Murren. I am worried we have picked the wrong train stations out of Munich & into Interlaken. Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Karen, The train connections you mentioned are certainly one option. You could also look at the departure at 06:48, also arriving at Interlaken Ost at 13:57. The benefit of the earlier train is that it only has one change. You'll be departing from Munich Hbf (main station) and arriving at Interlaken Ost. For buying tickets in Munich, I often go to the EurAide office (Desk 1 on the left) at the Munich Reisezentrum (ticket office) in the main station. They have English-speaking staff, and I've always found them to be very helpful. When you arrive at Interlaken Ost, walk inside the station and purchase ticket for Mürren BLM. When you have your tickets, take the short 20-minute ride on the Berner Oberland Bahn to Lauterbrunnen. You may also be able to purchase your tickets in Switzerland on the sbb.ch website, which would save you going inside the station. There may also be Kiosks on the platform (can't remember). Your tickets from Interlaken to Mürren will include ALL modes of transport. When you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, walk across the street to the Cable Car station and take the lift to Grütschalp. When you arrive at the top, transfer to the small mountain railway (which will be waiting) for the short and scenic ride (~30-45 minutes) to Mürren. There's another route to reach Mürren via Stechelberg and Gimmelwald, but the method I suggested is the most direct. Although the whole process sounds complicated, it's all rather easy. Happy travels!

First, where are you getting a fare to Mürren for that 7:17 connection? When I look up Munich to Muerren on the Bahn website, I don't find a fare all the way to Mürren for the 7:17 train. I do see an advance purchase fare in 2nd class for 118€ for two to Interlaken Ost on that 7:17 connection. I also see an advance purchase fare of 178€ (89€/P) all the way to Mürren for the 6:48 connection. If you buy an advance purchase ticket from the Bahn for the 6:48 train, they will send you a PDF file that you can print out as your ticket. The credit card you use for the purchase must be with you as identification.

Like Italy, www.bahn.de cannot see all the way to Muerren. Bahn can see Interlaken Ost. Recently, Italy couldn't even see past Spiez. The private railways in the Berner Oberland like it that way. The Jungfraubahn and the Schilthornbahn as well as a few other smaller railways in the B.O. are private railways inside the Swiss train system. You can seamlessly book them on the Swiss train website but try and book them from other countries. The suggestion is to buy your ticket on www.bahn.de to Interlaken Ost. Works great. Once in IO, buy your tickets to Muerren on the Muerren-BLM. At Interlaken Ost, you go out to track 2A and take the local Jungfraubahn train into Lauterbrunnen. About 20 minutes and quite scenic. At the Lauterbrunnen train station, follow the signs to the Lauterbrunnen BLM. It's just across the street to the gondola station next to the post office (about 300'). Take the gondola to Grutshalp. At Grutshalp, you can either walk the remaining distance into Muerren or take the train that will be waiting for you (Muerren BLM). Sounds complicated but you will enjoy every bit of it. What a treat and what a view.

karen, One other point to mention..... Before boarding the Berner Oberland Bahn at Interlaken Ost, check to see if there's a digital display on the rail car that indicates the destination. You can faintly see it in the photo I linked (the red lights above the word "Berner" on the closest car). On the way to Lauterbrunnen the train usually stops briefly at Zweilütschinen, but I can't remember if they split some of the cars there. It wouldn't hurt to make sure you're boarding a car that will be going to Lauterbrunnen. If in doubt, ask a member of the train staff. Cheers!

There will be train personnel standing on the platforms in the little Interlaken Ost station, and they will gladly direct you to the correct train/platform. Once you get to Interlaken Ost it is quite easy on up to Muerren. Sometimes the explanations and directions given here can sound daunting...but it really is simple. You'll see when you get there.
