Munich Lodging

Hello, does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay in Munich?

Bill, I recommend the Hotel Jedermann. Rooms are large and clean, and the place is in a great location. Without knowing it, the staff found my birthdate was going to fall on one of the nights I was staying. When I went down to the lobby that morning, the staff presented me with a traditional birthday cake-like treat and a bottle of sparkling wine. I would recomend the place based on the hotel and nothing more, but that gesture really was quite unexpected. Josh.

I found Pension Seibel (in Rick's book) more than adequate, if not spectacular. Advantages include the location, half a block from the Viktualmarkt, and the relatively low price, low at least for lodging in the center of Munich.

I would also suggest the Hotel Jedermann. The location is great, the rooms are nice and the breakfast is wonderful. I have stayed there twice on different trips at different times of the year. The staff are very helpful.

I like to stay at the NH Munchen Deutscher Kaiser. It is literally right across the street from the train station...and about 2 blocks from Marienplatz. Rooms are basic, yet very clean. Breakfast is pricey, however there are plenty of coffee bars, etc right around the corner.

Bill, I stayed at Hotel Uhland in Munich, and would certainly recommend it. The room was great, breakfasts were fantastic, and the location is good. There's no restaurant "on site" except for the breakfast room, but there are good restaurants within walking distance.

Cheers!

English Garden is a nice area. We had a blast when we visited one of the Bier Gartens and took one of the paddle boats out on the lake. What a great fun day that was!

Wherever you choose, make it close to the Marienplatz (MP) or Viktualienmarkt(VM) . Both are dead center in the pedestrian area. I've stayed both at the Marienplatz and the main train station, and I would never choose the train station again if there was an option in MP or VM.

There are some very nice hotels close the MP - try Hotel Platzl which is located right at the Hofbrauhaus. Also there is the Hotel Torbrau which is just a few step from the Platzl and located right a subway station and also Hotel Schiller.

I agree with the above poster's recommendation of the Hotel Blauer Bock which is close to VM as is the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt.

All of these places are close to the pedestrian areas of the altstadt which is SOOOO much nicer than the train station.

I stayed at the Hotel Ludwig. Opposite the train station. Read my review on tripadvisor.com.

Looks like you got some great replies, but I figured I throw another suggestion at you. We stayed at the Hotel Englischergarten which is out of the city center and right across the street from the Englischer Garten. A very neighborhoody feel and a good bakery and resturants in the area. Met a lot of locals out at some of the bars around the hotel. Clean, big rooms, nice shower. http://www.hotelenglischergarten.de/html/rooms.html Here are their posted rates (since price is almost always my first question), email to check rates.

We really liked Hotel Uhland: classy neighborhood, clean, well run, moderately priced (except during Oktoberfest), good breakfast. You'll probably do a lot of walking once you get downtown, so instead of walking downtown from the hotel -- a good hike -- take the subway. There's a station at the corner of the fairground where Oktoberfest is held, a 3 minute walk from the hotel.

I agree with Tim - - - stay near Marienplatz. The English Garden area is very nice but a hike from Marienplatz.

I stayed at Hotel Uhland in December 2004. I highly recommend it.
