Munich hotels or pensions

Hi - Looking for a nice place to stay within easy walking distance of Marienplatz. Not too expensive but doesn't have to be the cheapest. Hotel Blauer Bock and Pension Lindner both look good. Please advise. Thanks. Julia

I stayed at the Hotel Blauer Bock in June 2011. I would highly recommend it. Convenient location, friendly staff, clean room and bathroom, and lots of options for breakfast.

Another option is Hotel Uhland. I have not personally stayed there, however, I understand it is also good.

Julia, I would also highly recommend Hotel Uhland. It's located in a quiet residential area close to Theresienwiese (the Oktoberfest park). However, it's a bit farther in terms of walking to Marienplatz (although I've done it many times). You could also have a look at Hotel Royal, which is only about a five minute walk from the Munich HBf (I believe it's listed in the Guidebook). It will be about 12-minutes closer to Marienplatz than Hotel Uhland. I'll be back there again later this year, and quite looking forward to it! Happy travels!

Have stayed at Uhland and agree with Denise and Ken...close to the Hbf, and Marienplatz is certainly well within walking distance for those who like to walk.

Pension Lindner is really good, close to the Marienplatz, nice hostess and very good breakfast.

Here with another good word for Hotel Uhland. It is a longer walk to Marienplatz, but there is a bus stop right out front and a quick busride to the train station. It is quiet, nice, clean, has a great breakfast and great staff.

We did something different in Munich last summer and have booked a room at the same hotel for this summer. For years we have stayed at various hotels in the vicinity of the train station and not really enjoyed the "neighborhood". We had always want to be closer to the Marienplatz but didn't want to pay such high prices for the city center hotels. Last year we decided we'd try the new chain, Motel One. They have hotels in various locations but the newest one opened up next door to Sendlingen Tor. We loved the location and easy stroll to restaurants and the Marienplatz. We encountered a younger, mostly business class German clientele in the breakfast area. What we gave up in German kitsch ambiance with a family run establishment, we gained in an uber chic room in a wonderful location.

@James, "(Colorado Lee's head must be spinning...)" Lee is in Germany at the moment, so he probably hasn't seen this post about the "uber chic room" yet. Hopefully he'll see it within the next day or two.

@James We didn't think we were building up bigger walls as there were plenty of people speaking German around us and nary a blue book in sight. Also, we were on our way back from a month long home exchange so I think we had our wall removing travel covered in this way. We'll be doing something similar this summer.
