Munich Hotels

Any advice on whether a first time visitor would prefer to stay near the train station or old town?

I just returned from my first trip to Munich and stayed at the Hotel Blauer Bock in old town. I found the city to be very easy to walk and the distance from the train station to old town was a nice walk. I think either area would be fine.

Old town is the place to be if you want to be in the middle of historic places and pedestrian friendly outdoor markets and bier gartens.

Train station area has an abundance of strip clubs and porn stores...not exactly my idea of seeing Munich at its best.

The area around Marienplatz is nice and probably a more pleasant stay but sometimes at a higher price. We have stayed at Blauer Bock mentioned above and it was a very good location near Viktualienmarkt and therefore Marienplatz.

To see many of the sights in Munich it is handy to have a day pass on the transportation system. Therefore, we concentrate on staying near a ubahn or sbahn station. (Marienplatz & train station works.) We stayed near Sendlinger Tor last year and found it convenient, less than 10 minutes walk from Marienplatz.

This Advent season we will be staying near the Ostbahnhof as we enjoyed the Haidhausen district and its Christmas Market last year. Ostbahnhof is only 5 minutes by Sbahn from Marienplatz.

Regards, Gary

We've also stayed at Hotel Viktualienmarkt 2 years ago and again in about 2 weeks we will be there. They just completed a major facelift to the hotel, and as I look at the pictures from the website I can hardly even recognize the place. It looks wonderful!

We just stayed at Hotel Royal a few weeks ago. It is very close to the train station, but an easy walk to old town as well (10 minutes or so). We loved the hotel - good sized room, very clean & quiet, free coffee all day, friendly staff. There are several strip clubs on the same street, but we always felt safe - even arriving back to the hotel late at night.

Hi, Sharon. We have been to Munich twice in the last two years and each time we have stayed at Hotel Europlaischer (http://www.heh.de/default.aspx?lang=en). They have an awesome breakfast, which is why we stayed there again. Easy walk to the Marienplatz. Directly across the street from the train station. Can walk to shopping easily. There are discounts available depending on how early you book. For the second trip, I made the reservations online, realized I could get a better discount if I booked it a different way. Canceled it online with absolutely no problem and rebooked. I booked directly through the website. There may be better places, but we have enjoyed our stays there. We LOVE Munich.

I would be careful around the train station. We stayed a couple of blocks away from it and we were on the fringe of an area with strip clubs. I would lean more towards being closer to the old town area. If you do stay near the station it is easily walkable to the old town.

We booked at double room at the Wombats hostel and ended up with an enormous room with 6 bunk beds and 2 beds put together all to ourselves (we traveled in winter). Do not know if this happens all the time, but it was nice having all that room to hang up wet laundry. Plus I got to sleep with a billion pillows, because in Europe, you only get one in most places. It was about 2 blocks from the train station. Had decent breakfast and laundry facilities. Now would I stay there now (I'm 35), well I guess I would look for something more charming but 4 years ago, I could not beat the 30 euro a night charge for the room we were given.

I just got back and we stayed at the Hotel Uhland (on Rick's advice). It was wonderful - very charming and we walked from the central train station. Great all you can eat breakfast, an old converted mansion. We walked to the subway easily to get to old town. Check them out on the web.

If you don't have a car, stay in the Marienplatz area (you have some good recommendations for that area) With a car, Hotel Uhland is my first choice.

This is my first European trip, and we will not have a car. I appreciate all of your experiences and advice. Please keep it coming. I was interested in Hotel Uhland, but am leaning toward the Marienplatz area since this is our first visit. We will also be travelling to Nuremberg so if anyone has advice regarding hotels there, we would also appreciate that.

We stayed at the hotel Uland in the beginning of May and found it great. We did not have a car and walked to the old town, but we love to walk. It's in a lovely old neighborhood that is very quiet (we slept with our windows open and were not disturbed by noise). I'd definately stay there again.
