Munich Hotel for quick trip in December

We are 2 women who have been to Munich before and will be there briefly in December to go to the Christmas markets in Munich and Nurnberg. This is a last-minute plan, so we realize choices are limited. To maximize our limited time, we would prefer to stay somewhere with access to the main train station - either near the station or near a stop that links to the station. We'd like a mid-priced hotel - something clean, safe, and with an elevator. This would have been much simpler if we had planned months in advance, but that wasn't possible. Any advice you can give will be much appreciated!

SD, One Hotel that's very close to Munich Hbf is Hotel Royal. I was there in late August for a few days, and quite enjoyed my stay. The rooms are very comfortable, the staff are great and they serve a great breakfast! As I recall, there's a small Elevator. Some consider the area around the Hotel to be a bit "colourful", but I didn't have a problem with it. Happy travels!

Christmas Markets 2010: In Munich, I stayed at the Hotel Modern at 16 Schiller Str. It's a couple of short walking blocks (5 mins) from the central train station. We had a double room with en suite, decent breakfast buffet. About a 15-20 minute stroll to Marienplatz. Katstadt Dept Store is directly across the street; that offers a quick, and inexpensive cafeteria option, as well as convenient food shopping for snacks, soda, wine etc. hotel-modern.de. If you google you should get a translate option, but I booked thru booking.com originally. If you haven't booked Nuremberg yet, you might want to look at the Hotel Elch. it's located in the Castle Quarter, so it's not extremely close to the train station, BUT it's about a block to the Christmas Marketplace. I booked this, then discovered it was a RS "recommended". The half timbered building was built in the 14th century, but rooms and en suites are 21st century. The restuarant there specializes in Schitzel (what else?) and I discovered there that the putenchnitzel (Turkey) is my favourite. Up to that point I didn't know you could schnitzel a turkey. hotel-elch.com. Excellent breakfast buffet, IMO. Both places were reasonably priced.

Hi, Eating in the cafeteria at Karstadt dept. store is a good budget option. Food is good, relatively cheap, and the place is large with a good deal of choice. I like it as a place to eat, relax, and get "far from the madding crowd." From the München Hbf. you can access it by going through the underground (Bahnhofspassage). I stay in the area of the München Hbf. at a Pension. On Schiller Strasse you'll see numerous small hotels and Pensionen.

We always stay at Hotel Europaischer, which is directly across the street from HBF. It is not modern but it is very clean, very friendly staff, an excellent breakfast buffet, ensuite rooms and it has an elevator. They even offer up to a 20% discount if you pay in full 15 days in advance. When I looked earlier today the rates ranged from 87 euros to 117 euros using the 20% discount depending on the type of room and if you buy breakfast. I have always felt safe staying there. We even eat at the HBF sometimes while there, we think the chicken and schnitzel sandwiches are great! There is even a McDonald's and a grocery store down on the lower level and a Burger King around the main entrance. As someone else said it does connect with Karsdadt in that walkway as well. I envy you going for the Christmas markets, I hope to go next year. Have a great time!

Thanks for great suggestions. We are leaning toward Europaischer because of location and the many reviews that mentioned how clean it was - plus the praises for the breakfast.

You didn't way when you are going but we stay at the Hotel Luitpold. It has an elevator, pretty good breakfast included in the price and is a quaint germany hotel. It is right across from the train station and within walking distance to Marienplatz

Nothing wrong with the Europaischer, location, nice people and great breakfast ...but, the street noise from the three hostels on the side street is unrelenting till 4:00 AM.....spring for an inside room ( 20E ),money well spent...enjoy Munich
