Hi, My husband & I will be in Munich for a couple days and looking for a hotel or hostel that would be fairly reasonable price for 1-2 nights. We have a bit of flexibility with our schedule, but would arrive Munich either Thursday 9/26/13 or Friday 9/27. If accommodations were better prices for 3 nights, we could stay Sat night, but would prefer to leave to meet our family who live in Stuttgart area on Sat. We are in our late 20s & want to enjoy Oktoberfest activities, but do enjoy sleep as well! We plan to go to the Bayern Munich game on the 28th. Besides hotels, any other ideas/suggestions for activities/sights are welcome! Thank you!
I don't have any lodging suggestions, but because you'll be in Stuttgart at that time, are you aware of the Cannstatter Volksfest? It's very similar to Munich's Oktoberfest, but because it isn't nearly as well known, it doesn't attract the annoying international frat boy demographic. Having been to both, I much prefer Stuttgart's fest. Not nearly as jammed packed, and the wannabe Delta House crowd is mostly absent. And actually, Germany is filled with these sort of harvest fests. My personal favorite is Bad Dürkheim's Wurstfest, which despite the name, is actually more about wine than sausages.
You may be hard pressed to find anything now. I usually book a good 6 months out when we go to Oktoberfest. If you can't find anything in Munich then I would try Augsburg and take the train in each day. Sounds like a good combo Oktoberfest and Bayern Munich. Good luck. Did that last year. It was great. Mia San Mia! Prost!
It is going to be hard to find a hotel or especially a hostel in Munich during Oktoberfest at this point. You need to figure out what is available rather than seeking general recommendations. Use a booking site like Venere.com or Booking.com to see what is available on your dates, then check the location and make your choice.
Pension Westfalia is almost right across the street from the Oktoberfest grounds. It is a very economical place to stay which also means lodging is adequate vice fantastic. The staff there is very helpful and you should be able to do a search for their website. I stayed there twice during 2012 but not during Oktoberfest. It is not on the first floor of the building and you could easily conclude you have gone into an old office building but look for their card by the doorbell to ring you in. When I stayed there, a single room ran about 60 Euros per night and that included breakfast and wi-fi.
Pension Westfalia is worth a try because they don't do on-line bookings. You have to call or email, which discourages some who are looking for easy online booking. But I would get on it right away.
Hotel Uhland is really close and nice, I would suggest it, it's priced reasonable. As far as activities, Oktoberfest is really great. I've gone twice and would go every year if I could. Get the Rick book and take his walk in the historic old town area. Read about the museums and hit the ones that interest you. Go to the Hoffbrauhaus. It's very fun and has great food and entertainment.
