We need a hotel in munich, arriving 13 June and departing 15 June (2 nights). We've checked with almost all the hotles that Rick Steves' recommended- but some are twice as much as his book says! I can't find a big festival there that weekend, and I know it's summer- but it's still early.
For instance I wanted to stay at Hotel Reinbold- Rick Steves' quotes it at 89 euro, the hotel webpage says 189 euro! I know he says you can get the discount with his book and paying in cash- but really- half the price?
If anyone can suggest where to stay, I'd appreciate it. We wanted to try and spend about 85 euro/night (doesn't need to include breakfast), and my husband and I are the ones traveling. We don't mind staying cheaper in Munich as we are spending more money in other cities. I just need it to be clean! Thanks everyone!
There may not be a big festival in Munich, but the Euro 2008 soccer tournament, the biggest soccer event in Europe held every 4 years inbetween World Cups, is going on in Switzerland and Austria. Many of the matches are being played in Salzburg, and with Munich so close by train there is a lot of spill over. This is probably the reason for the high prices. I know it affected the train tickets and the availability of discount fares.

I stayed at the tourist hotel Ludwig opposite the train station. Read my and other reviews on tripadvisor.com.
Jeff- no availability. I looked at that hotel- thanks!
There are many reasons why the two don't match:
1) You are staying over a weekend and weekend rates during tourist season may be higher than weekday rates.
2) You may be quoted the "rack rate" which is what the hotel would like to get but only gets from people who don't look for a cheaper rate.
3) There may be somethinig going on in town that weekend and not necessarily a festival. It could be a convention.
4) Rick updates his guidebooks up to a year ahead. The dollar has fallen in value and costs have risen in all countries.
My suggestion is to oontact the hotel directly, tell them Rick Steves suggested you contact them, tell them you will pay in cash, and ask what is the best rate they can give. You can usually get a better rate at a small hotel by contacting them directly.
The same thing happened to me when trying to book a hotel in Milan; however, I emailed them and quoted the guidebook and the prices. They wrote back and gave me Rick's rate.

Amanda,
You might try www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html to see if that might work for you. I stayed there on my last visit, and would certainly recommend it. They provide breakfast, but there's no restaurant on the premises (there are good restaurants nearby though).
If you're travelling reasonably light, it's easy to walk there from the rail station (I used a Taxi on arrival, but walked after that).
Happy travels!
Just a reminder that the dollar has fallen again against the Euro so all prices in guidebooks are g oing to be off if quoted in dollars. Also there is quite a bit of inflation lately. I know this doesn't help you find a hotel but be forewarned. Also try Tripadvisor.com for hotel recommendations.
We stayed at the Pension Locarno. It is right by the train station. I don't recall the price exactly but it was far cheaper then that.
Amanda, my wife and I stayed at the Hotel Monaco last August in downtown Munich. We paid 80 Euros for one night. E-Mail: [email protected] or www.hotel-monaco.de Dorsey
Hi Amanda,
Munich is celebrating their 850th birthday this year, and are having huge celebrations in June, which is probably why all the hotels are either booked out or cost you an arm and a leg..
You may want to check this out:

I used one of those bidding sites and got two rooms at a 2 star hotel called Courtyard By Marriott Munich City Center for $85.75 each in April. That inculdes the booking fee from the website which was about $30. It worked out for us. Breakfast isn't included.
Search the RS recommended hotels on hrs.com, hotel.de and ehotel.de. Those sites get better rates than the hotels announce on their own websites...
