Munich/Fussen/Salzburg

We are flying into Munich from London on a Monday afternoon. We'll leaving Munich Saturday afternoon. Our hope is to see some of Munich and visit the Fussen area as well as Salzburg. We'd prefer to travel by train, but not overlook scenic routes. It appears both cities are an easy train ride from Munich. Is there a scenic train route between Fussen & Salzburg?

Not really. The absolute fastest route is back through Munich. The direct route from Munich to Salzburg is pretty flat and ordinary. From Munich you could take a side trip to Prien. Go by boat out to the Herreninsel on Chiemsee to see Ludwig's Versailles knockoff Herrenchiemsee. You could also change trains in Freilassing and go down to Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden is the epitome of scenic. There is a bus from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg. But Freilassing is only minutes from Salzburg. The most of that route is still the flat land from Munich to Salzburg. From Fuessen, you could also go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by bus, then by train to Innsbruck via Mittenwald and Seefeld. From Innsbruck you can go by Austrian Rail via Zell am See and Bischofshofen, but that is really the long way around.

Thanks for the helpful info. I'm thinking it might make sense to rent a car, and then we'll have more flexibility.

Any suggestions for driving instead from Fussen to Salzburg? I'm sure it would take longer and be more scenic.

the drive from munich to fussen is really nice, esp. when you get close to fussen. sound of music scene all along with little villages dotted around. it's well worth the rental car cost, if you're into taking good fotos, and by staying with the farmers you can save money and still find good rooms with the castle view.

Thanks for the advice. I think renting a car is the way go. The route from Fussen to Salzburg appears to be scenic as well...some of the drive along the Alpine Strasse.

I have driven this route in the summer and it was beautiful and will now be doing it again in a few weeks. I love the flexibility of the car to stop as I please. There are lots of beautiful places to stop for photo opportunities as well.

If driving between Fussen & Salzburg by car, is it feasible to do in a day? We may stay overnight in Fussen after a day's visit there and then head out towards Salzburg with the intent of staying there. I appreciate all the advice.
