Hi all- My husband and I are headed to Munich, we will have 8 full days there and then two travel days. We are leaving the states March 30th and flying home on Easter, April 8th. My questions are: 1. Is Verona worth a visit? Or should we go to Venice? Want to just go early one day then stay overnight one night and head back to Germany. 2. We want to drive around to Bavaria and also down to Italy, should this be fairly easy? Also, do the rentals come with GPS's or do we need to figure that out before we go? Any other tips are welcome!
Another side trip I am considering is Prague. But I only want to do one or the other, not both. So Verona or Prague?
To me Munich is convenient for day/overnight trips into the Alps, Austrian lakes; Mittenwald, Garmisch, these can keep you busy enough not to need italy. Had a Czech friend who regularly flew into Munich and then drove to Prague
Driving the highway from Munich to Verona ( minimum 4 hours according to viamichelin.com) or to Venice ( 6 hours same, feels like all day) is a long way to go for just one night. We drove the Brenner pass, so enjoyed seeing the Dolomites, but it is a long way and we were spending 6 days in Italy. Plus once you get to Venice you have to park, take a vaporetto, find your hotel. I think Venice is great but it deserves 2 nights at least. Generally you should add 25% to the viamichelin figures to allow for stops, meals, traffic. Have driven from Munich to Prague and it is faster, 3 hours 48 min viamichelin) but unless you are in your own car ,you must make sure the rental company allows the car into the Czech Republic ( not all do). Not every car comes with GPS, depending on the agency.
Love driving in Bavaria, hope you have a great time.
8 days in Munich? That's a lot. Does that include side trips to, say, Garmisch, or Dachau, or Andechs, or Nuremberg? If so, 8 days there might be about right. Everyone should go to Venice, but 2 days/one night doesn't seem enough time to justify a trip there. Pretty hard to drive in Venice, by the way :). If you had another day and took the train, it would make more sense. You might instead visit Salzburg and perhaps nearby Berchtesgaden. The Bayern Ticket, by the way, will get 2 people from Munich to Salzburg by train for 29€ in under 2 hours. http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm
"Also, do the rentals come with GPS's or do we need to figure that out before we go?" They come standard on some models, others you need to request one. Personally, though, I find that a GPS in Germany sometimes makes driving more difficult than just following the road signs.
