Munich during Oktoberfest?

My husband and I plan to (hopefully) go to Munich for our anniversary, which happens to be in the middle of Oktoberfest. This is starting to sound like not such a good idea, as the place is likely to be a zoo (?) Does anyone out there have a suggestion of a place to stay nearby that would be convenient by train?

Jennie,
I was in Munich last year for Oktoberfest and the fairgrounds are crowded, but the town was not too bad for sightseeing. I stayed at the Marriott Renaissance in Munich and I thought it was a good location. It is in a business area, but the subway was very close by. It was a 10 min. ride to the town center and to the fairgrounds. The Marriott is just down the street from the Renaissance so you have two to pick from. It is also nice outside of Munich such as Reutte. I think you could take the train in to town for the festival. Have a good time.

There are any number of towns surrounding Munich that can accommodate you for that busy period. The excellent transportation system makes it easy to travel from farther away (although Reutte is a bit waaay out). Trains may be crowded, but if you are at the start of a spur, you will hold your seats while later revelers pile on in. Although there are Oktoberfests all over Bavaria, most of them attract only the locals. For some quality accommodations it's a good idea to visit regional websites and see what's available. I'd go no farther out than Freising, Fürstenfeldbruck, or Rosenheim.

I would guess that at this point you would expect to pay around 300 euros a night for a place in Munich directly (if you can find one). 5 months ago when I was trying to find a place it was 200 euros or more and most of the places in town were I asked were booked months ahead.

I am sure you could probably find a room in a high end hotel, but is that what want to spend for what is pretty much just a fair?

My wife and I went last year and are going again this year. We reserved our room both times about six months in advance. The price wasn't too bad but it is a timing issue as many people have standing reservations each year.

A few of the people we talked to in the beer tents were staying outside of Munich and took the train in each day.

The Oktoberfest grounds are tremendous fun, but sightseeing is very easy in Munich during the festivities.

Prost!

"which happens to be in the middle of Oktoberfest"

If you do not specifically want to visit Oktoberfest, it is a costly time to visit Munich. There are many locations in Germany, not that far from the Munich airport, that could make for a nice anniversary trip, Regensburg and Salzburg are two that I might consider but there are many others.

Salzburg is amazingly beautiful and a reasonable train ride from Munich. I think it would be great for an anniversary.

In Munich, the more outlying the accomodation, the less the cost will be inflated. You could also pick a pension in a suburban area available by public transit.

The fest ends each night at 10:30, so I think everything is still running when it lets out.
