Any input on the best place to purchase (in cases) local Munich beers? Or are the local supermarkets a persons best bet vs liquor stores?

Germany doesn't have liquor stores. You can buy your beer, wine or spirits and schnapps in the grocery store or for a really large variety, go to a Getränke Markt. This is a store that just sells drinks of all kinds, from coke, beer, wines, boxes of bottles beer, or kegs. There isn't much difference in price, but they might be a little lower. Surprisingly, Aldi is supposed to sell some decent wines.

... and beer comes in a plastic carton, not a cardboard case. You are expected to return the carton and the empty bottles for a deposit.
