MUNICH BREWERY TOURS

Isn't there a well known brewery about an hours train ride from Munich? If so, what's the name. Thank you.

I believe you're referring to Andechs Monastery. Well worth the effort. Good food, better beer. But I think you need to catch a bus from the train station to get there.

To get to Andechs (SW of Munich), take the S5 S-bahn to Herrsching. From there it is a short bus ride to Adechs. If you are using an MVV Gesamtnetz Tageskarte, most buses should be included. Some trains are met by a private bus, but it only cost a few Euro.

Andechs charges for the brewery tour.

There is another brewery, Weihenstephan, the world's oldest, in Freising, north of Munich, near the airport. You can get to Freising on the S1. I'm not sure how you get to the brewery from the Bahnhof, but I would bet there is a bus.

I arrived at Andech mid-morning. When I saw that they charged for the brewery tour, I decided that I've toured a lot of breweries for free; I wasn't about to pay for one. I walked around the grounds, looked at the church. It was still early for lunch, but having nothing else to do, I went up to the counter, got a slice of pork, pretzel, and a ½l of bier, and sat down facing away from the counter. There was no one at the counter at the time. I finished my food and bier and decided I wanted some more. I looked around and the lines stretched across the room. Moral: get everything you might want the first time through. It gets busy.

Are you thinking of Ayinger? It's about 35 minutes from Munich off of the S6.
