Munich Bermany

I will be in Munich only for an afternoon and evening. What do I absolutely need to see? I am challenged because the time is so short. I'd rather spend time doing 1-2 things, than race all over trying to see many things. Help! Also, any restaurant suggestions?

Lynn, Another possibility would be to take one of the Munich Walks tours (if one is offered that afternoon), to get some sense of the history of the city. During the evening, explore Marienplatz and have a walk through the Hofbrauhaus as it's always entertaining. Happy travels!

It depends somewhat on what you like. With so little time I wouldn't suggest the Deutsches Museum or any of the others. I would concentrate my time around Marienplatz. You won't be there for the 11 AM performance of the Glockenspiel, but you can see the outside of the Gothic Rathaus. If you like churches, the Frauenkirche could be interesting. There is the Fussganger (pedestrian) zone stretching to the west, to Karlstor, with lots of shops. To the southeast is the Viktualienmarkt (outdoor market). And of course, the Hofbräuhaus is nearby (NE), for good beer, inexpensive food, and a taste of Oktoberfest.

As a contrast, I would visit the Asamkirche (church) as well as the Frauenkirche already mentioned. The Frauenkirche is large and bright. The rococo Asam church is small, dark and heavily ornate. The Frauenkirche was built over ages to overawe. The Asamkirche was built as family chapel by the Asam brothers, rococo artists and builders. They are close together and near Marienplatz.

I did a similar trip once where I did a late morning to late afternoon in Munich. I'd recommend spending your time in the main city center because there's enough to see and you won't have to worry about transportation time. I agree with the suggestion to see Asamkirche, but for me the Frauenkirche was so-so. I preferred the Theatinerkirche. I also went to the Residenz (I think this took me 2 hrs, but I rushed), which I highly recommend, and took a walking tour of the Altstadt - you could probably just do this on your own too. I also climbed up the steps of Old Peter for a panorama of the city, which was very strenuous! If you really like art, some of the art museums aren't too far away and have good collections, which could be an alternative to the Residenz. I would suggest the Augustiner Keller to eat; it's another traditional brewery. It's closer to the Hauptbahnhof/main train station.

Check out times for the "Glokenspiel" show at the Rathaus, I saw it at about 5pm. There are a number of beerhalls on and near the pedestrian zone. But Hofbrauhaus is the biggest and probably the one to shoot for

When you are standing in Marienplatz, facing the Rathaus, look over your right shoulder. Here you will find the tower of St. Peters church. I would agree, the view from the top is worth the climb. BTW,Lynn, go back to your original post, and click edit. Change the spelling of "Bermany" to the preferred spelling, "Germany".

Isn't Bermany that little country lodged between Belgium and Germany? :)

According to Wikipedia and ToyTownGermany, 5 PM performance of the Glockenspiel is only in the summer.

We were there for only a day and took one of the sightseeing busses as well as walking around the area already suggested. We do this in every city we go to and always enjoy it. It's a good way to see all the highlights.

Will it be in the summer? Start with a look around Marienplatz (cathedral and rathaus) then to the English Garden for afternoon sun and dinner in a beer garden. Munich has some great museums (the art museums are some of my favorites), as well as Nymphenburg palace, but I don't think you have time for those.

Are there any other Munichs besides the one in Bermany? Actually this spelling would move is up in the alphabet and at opening ceremonies at Olympic games held in English speaking languages our team would walk in a little earlier. In French and Spanish speaking countries with start with an "A" already anyway, so no need to rename us there... ;-)

Restaurant: The Ratskeller on Marienplatz is great for German food (as most of them are) this one is huge. Either that or one of the beer halls (also one on Marienplatz) and a few others in close proximity

I agree with most here that you should head for Marienplatz and focus on the old city center. In Marienplatz, yes, watch the Townhall chiming clock if you're there at the right time of the day. The show starts every day at 11am and at noon. Be punctual, it lasts 15 minutes. There is a show at 5pm also, but only from March to October. If you want to have a really good view of the Glockenspiel, then go the bookshop called Hugendubel across the square and head for the 4th floor! As for the restaurant, this is a good site to find what you are looking for (all depends on what kind of cuisine you want really!) http://www.toytowngermany.com/munich/restaurants_in_munich.html
