Munich, Berlin, Salzburg or Vienna

We are traveling from Venice to Hamburg and have time for a two night stay in between. We are a mom and a 16 year old boy. Which city would be best?

Especially for a 16 years old Berlin would certainly be the most exciting. Or you do Neuschwanstein, the luge and then Munich and Salzburg, which are not that far apart. Vienna, as beautiful the city is, is a bit off track for you...

By car or train? Since you want to select only one of those four, Vienna is easy to eliminate because, unlike the others, it is far to the east of the "line" of the rest of your possible destinations.

Salzburg!!!! It is one of our favorite places. Lots to see and do. We took our kids to Europe starting when they were 9. They both (a boy and a girl) loved Salzburg and still talk about wanting to go back (son turing 21 next month, daughter now 29 and pregant).

I was in Salzburg with my sons at the ages of 13 and 16 - they loved it - and it is an easy city to manage.

Hi Vera,
I'd also go with Salzburg. We've been three times and is one of our favorites. Two nights is just right to wander the old town and see the sights.

Perhaps we will start at Salzburg and, then we can still go to Munich as well if we feel like it.

The answer is YES! The question is which one is more efficient. I would suggest Munich as your son will see a lot of Germans his own age mulling about. It's a very cosmopolitan place.

Berin, Prague and Vienna are an easy group of cities to save for another trip. Stay on your direct line from Venice to Hamburg as much as possible. Don't go out of your way to see something else. My guess is that you'll have to go through Munich to get to Hamburg no matter what, and there's a really good chance that you'd have to change trains anyway.

Probably Munich is best for your trip (although Salzburg is great). Munich will have more to see and do. Berlin and Vienna add considerable travel time.

If you feel like being particularly active, Salzburg really isn't that far from Munich. You could get accommodation in Munich, but then take a short bus ride to Salzburg and explore the city before returning back to Munich for the second day.

If you don't want to do this, just go to Salzburg - it's fantastic.
