Hotel Uhland is a few blocks south of the main rail station (Hauptbahnhof) in Munich. The neighborhood just south of the station is "international" but I don't know that it is unsafe. Uhland itself is in a nice neighborhood.
If you don't want to walk, the U4/U5 line goes from the south entrance of the Hbf. Next stop is the Theresienwiese station, about a block from Uhland.
Hello Frances,
If you looking for a Bed and Breakfast and don't mind making connections, train and bus. Zevatt's is a great place, reasonably priced, great breakfast, great hosts, and in a good neighborhood. Here is there website http://www.bedandbreakfast-zeevat.de/index.php?topo=titulo2&cont=en&menu=menu3
Our group of 5 stayed there last year and loved it.
Frances, I stayed in this B&B several years ago. It's southwest of the city in the town of Gauting. It was easy to get to by the city's transit system. Here's the website: http://www.gaestehausbauer-gauting.de/ Have fun on your trip.
You might wish to check out Pension Lindner. It is near Marienplatz. You can find plenty of information about it through Google, We made reservations there on the strength of good reviews from previous travelers, but I cannot speak personably about it, as we have not stayed there yet. I believe this is one of the placesin Munich that Rick recommends in his Germany guidebook
