Munich at ocktoberfest

My husband & I are planning a last minute trip through Germany and are flying out of Munich on 9/28. We are pleased this is Ocktoberfest, but hotels are few & expensive. Is there more to do in Munich other than sit in a tent & drink beer? Should we plan more than 1 day /2 nights?

Munich is a popular destination all year - not just during Oktoberfest. Rick's guide gives you a good run-down on other sights and activities.

That said, I think I would pick a different destination given the time you'll be there. There are many interesting places in Bavaria and Germany besides Munich, which, while interesting enough, is simply overrun at that time, and suffers for it.

You could visit Bamberg and/or Nuremberg, or maybe Regensburg, instead - then spend a final night in Freising and fly out of MUC the next morning. If Freising is experiencing the same hotel overload, try Landshut, to the northeast of MUC, with good train connections, or maybe even Regensburg, which isn't that far away from MUC either.

There is a lot to see in and around Munich. It really depends on what you are into. If you want to include the German Museum or the Pinakotheks you at least need half a day for either one alone. A walk thru the city to see the main details is half a day, too. So is Oktoberfest (2nd half of the day ideally). Experiencing the English Garden is at least 1/4 of a day. Dachau is at least half a day, the Olympic park and BMW museum 1/4 day each.... That usually adds up to the average stay of 3 days. Plus you want to be able to explore more of Munich's great restaurant szene and nightlife other than the Beerfest...
