I will be staying in Munich a couple days and have the option to travel to Berchtesgaden or Garmisch. I have previously been in Berchtesgarden and really liked the area. It appears there is a train that goes direct to Garmisch from Munich. Is Garmisch as scenic? Should I go through the extra work to travel to Berchtesgarden?
I've been to each place three times, although once in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was just a change of trains. I feel that there is a lot more to see and do in Berchtesgaden. However, if you have never been to Ga-Pa, you should see it once. Get to Ga-Pa early and go up the Zugspitze while the weather is still clear. Later visit the shops in town or hike in the Klamm.
Hi Dan, While we love the Berchtesgaden area (we've stayed 4 times for a total of 13 nights in the last 7 years), The G-P area is just as scenic. We stayed twice (4/05 aqnd 10/06 for a total of 7 nights) in Mittenwald, just 20 minutes from Garmisch and very easy by train. Actually goes via Garmisch from Munich. The train station is an easy, level 5 to 10 min. walk from the extremely charming pedestrian zone. If you've been to the Berchtesgaden area and liked it, I think you'll also like the G-P/Mittenwald area. If staying overnight, I'd go with Mittenwald. We definitley prefer it to Garmisch. www.worldisround.com/articles/324763/index.html Paul
