We will be in Munich in mid-May. I am thinking of finding an apartment rental for 5-6 days and taking day trips to castles, Dachau, etc. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Most of those are close enough for day trips, am I right? We will leave Munich to head up the Romantic Road, finishing the German leg of our trip in Koln.
Has anyone had any contact with apartment rentals in Munich? Do any stand out in your mind? Care to share? Thanks!
Dachau is no more a "day trip" than is the Deutsches Museum or the Alte Pinokotheke. It's in the Munich metro district, just barely outside the inner tariff zone. It only takes 38 min to get there from the Hbf (42 min from Marienplatz), including 21 min on the S-Bahn and 7 min on the bus. An XXL Partner Tageskarte costs €12,80, only €3 more than the same ticket for the inner zone and will cover up to five people on the S-Bahn and the bus, as well as all of your other transport in Munich for the day. Admission is free, but the tours or audio guides cost a few Euro.
I did understand that about Dachau. I didn't express it clearly, but, what I was trying to explain was that we need a place near Munich from which we can head out on day trips. Dachau is on our list, that's all.
I've never used a Ferienwohnungen in Munich as I'm usually by myself or with only one other person, but my "gut" feeling is you'll probably have more success looking in the suburbs, somewhere like Erding or Freising (maybe Dachau) rather than the city center. Hopefully, people here will have suggestions. If not, try this web page first, rather than a booking website. Booking websites, in my experience, have a very limited selektion of higher priced properties. If you are willing to stay in Freising, near the airport (20 min by bus), there is Monteurhaus, which has apartments with kitchens. I spent one night in Gästehaus Knoth, next door, same owner, in 2008 before leaving the next morning from MUC. It was a little spartan, but a bargain. I asked Herr Knoth if he could speak English well enough for me to recommend him to English only tourist, and he replied in the affirmative, but he replied in German, so I don't know. From nearby Freising Bahnhof, there are 3 S-bahn per hour (takes 41 min to the Hbf). There are also a couple of REs per hour, which take 23 min.
