Munich and Salzburg...how many nights in each?

I am planning a family trip in October and we will be staying in Munich and Salzburg. Of the four nights we have, how many should we do in each city? I was going to spend two nights in each city but now am thinking 3 nights in Munich and 1 in Salzburg. We are dfinately going to see the castles and saltmines but also need time to see each city. Any recommendations? We will slos have our car with us, if that makes any difference. Thank you!

I would do 3 nights in Munich, 1 night in Salzburg. Salzburg is lovely, but seeing the old city/castle takes well less than a day, and with day two you can see the stuff outside of the city (saltmines, Berchtesgaden, etc) easily in a day with a car. I think 3 nights is a perfect amount of time for Munich.

Been to both. Agree. Don't forget the Barvarian/Bayern ticket when traveling between Munich and Salzburg.

I agree with the above posters - less time in Salzburg, more time in Munich. Traffic getting in and out of Salzburg was dreadful the day we went ( a weekday in August).

Just depends on what you want to see and do? For Munich, are you interested in the Palace, Dachau, Deutsches Museum or the fine art museums? And, do you want to head down to the castles in Fuessen? For Salzburg, you mentioned the salt mines. Did you also want to head to Berchtesgaden or go to Obersalzburg to see the Nazi Documentation Museum and Hitler's Bunkers? Do you plan on going on the Sound of Music Tour? In Salzburg itself, the Hohensalzburg fortress, Mozart's birthplace? The excursions outside of Salzburg are what take up your time. Both cities are wonderful. Have a great trip!

I'd suggest 4 nights in each city. Only kidding, since that's not an option. Having been to both on the same trip, I'd opt for 2 and 2. Neither is enough, but 1 day almost anywhere is just too short if you can swing 2.

I agree with 2 and 2. Its so difficult to only do 1 night because you get so little time once you check in to a hotel and then to have to get up and check out the next day. Both are great, and maybe Munich has more to do, but I definitely prefer the size of Salzburg and found plenty to do. You will just want to return!

Thank you all for your posts. I think we decided for 2 nights in each city as originally planned. Hopefully, that will be enough :)
