I have a week and I am flying in and out of Munich. It will be my first time to Bavaria and I was thinking Munich, Salzburg, Rothenburg and Fussen. One of my travelmates has been to all these places and really wants to work in Switzerland. I was wondering if there would be a reasonable way to make a trip to Switzerland and due to time and money constraints what would make the most sense? Also if we went to Switzerland would it be best to cut out something and would that something be Rothenburg since everything else is in the south? By the way this is from Jan 29- Feb 5 thanks so much!

Even without Switzerland, 7 days is still barely enough time for the 4 other destinations. With Switzerland (and it really depends on where you had in mind), you have barely enough time for Munich, Switzerland and one side trip. A word about working in Switzerland- it is probably the single most difficult country in Europe for a foreigner to find legal work. Unless your friend holds an advanced degree or already works for an overseas branch of a Swiss company (ie, Roche or Nestle), he/she has almost no chance. If they are a citizen of an EU or European Free Trade Association nation, it's somewhat easier, but still pretty difficult.

I don't think the friend wants to "work" in Switzerland, I think that was Ken's way of saying the friend wants to work Switzerland into the trip. I think you are trying to do a lot in a little time. I think you could reasonably see Munich, Salzburg and either Fussen OR Rothenburg in a week. I have been to all those places and enjoyed them, but Rothenburg is certainly the most out of the way. Will you be basing in Munich and doing day trips or will you spend nights in your destination?

Hi Ken, Exactly how many nights do you have IN Europe and how do you plan to get around (car, train)? I'd pass on Switzerland and Rothenburg and see Munich, Salzburg and Fuessen. Plenty to see and do in and around these three locations for a week. Paul

It is a quick trip and the total night count is 7. I thought about a car but diriving in the snow might be a bit much for a California guy so right now I am looking at the trains.

We've been to Munich/Salzburg/Fussen and Munich/Salzburg/Mauthausen and each of those trips took us a week. I'd save Switzerland for another trip.

Hi Ken, With 7 nights I'd still go with Salzburg, Fuessen and Munich. Maybe somethng like this: 2 in Salzburg, 2 in Fuessen and the final 3 in Munich. Myself, I'd probably substitute Fuessen with Mittenwald and see "Mad" King Ludwig's Linderhof Palace nearby. Then again, I'd probably go with 3 nights in Mittenwald and 2 nights in Munich. This is a difficult choice---but I have to say to me Rothenburg was simply the quaintest place I've ever seen. It may be to much like a fairy tale for you, but you really should google "Rothenburg" under images, or look at photos at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g187319-Rothenburg_ob_der_Tauber_Romantic_Road_Bavaria-Vacations.html .
