MUNICH AIRPORT TO MUNICH HBF

I will be landing in Munich on 10/7, then need to get to the HBF for a train to Vienna later in the morning. I have built in enough time in case of several hours of airline delays. Familiar with the U-Bahn/S-Bahn in Munich. Question - I will be traveling with another person. Is the streifenkarte a better value or a one-way ticket? I noticed each person has to use 8 zones to get to the HBF for a total of 9.20 Euros each. If I purchase a streifenkarte, won't I have to purchase the card with 10 strips, which is over 11 Euros, or will the machine spit out a card with only 8 strips if that is all I need? Also, for the streifenkarte or one-way tickets, is there a companion ticket?

There is also a Lufthansa Airport Bus (you can fly any airline) that goes back and forth about every 20 min. to Hauptbahnhof. It stops in front of each terminal. One-way ticket is 10 Euro and two-way is 17 Euro per person. I remember it took about 40 min. to get to the airport from behind the main train station. In front of the station is a large Karstadt Department Store with a food and deli market on the very bottom floor, where you could pick up some food for the train if you have time. The website for the bus is: www.airportbus-muenchen.de. There's a provision for printing out your ticket but I bought mine on the bus.

The Streifenkarten (strip tickets) are sold in strips of 10, so unless you are going to be in Munich for a while, you probably can't make them come out even, and you'll waste some. However, a Gesamtnetz Partner-Tageskarte for 18,80 will cover all of your travel for a day, by any means of transport, for up to 5 people, in the entire Munich metro area. . . . . ¶ www.germantravel-info.com/MUC-Munich.htm. . . . . ¶ The Tageskarte costs a little less than two 4-zone tickets, so you won't save much money, but if you made a wrong turn (for instance missed the Hbf exit, which is underground) you could backtrack at no extra cost, or you could stop at Marienplatz on the way to the Hbf. If you had a Geldkarte, a prepaid debit card, you could get two 4-zone tickets for €9,20, same price as with the Streifenkarte.

"The Lufthansa Airport bus is easy and convenient". . . . . . . ¶ And so it the S-Bahn, as well as being less expensive and not prone to traffic delays. Plus the Tageskarte is good for the entire day. Will you put your luggage underneath to shuttle bus? Will you get off when it stops at the Nordfriedhof to make sure no one takes it?

If you are going to one of the hotels near the Englischer Garten, the bus is definitely the way to go - at least quicker, but not less expensive. However, to the Hbf, the bus would definitely be second choice to the S-Bahn. That's particularly true if you are coming into Munich to stay at least overnight.
