Hi fellow travelers,
Curious as to people's experience getting from the Munich airport to the city. After a 12 hour flight from LAX my inclination is to jump in a cab. Rick recommends the S-Bahn or Lufthansa bus (which is our airline). I know he tends to favor cheaper options but after a long flight not sure if I want to have to figure out public transportation. Cab might be worth expense of relaxation. Would love to hear others' thoughts. Todd
You have to do what you feel comfortable with, but I took the s-bahn after my long flight and it was no problem. It was really easy to figure out. I bought a ticket at a stand at the airport. Everything was well marked, so it was easy to find the correct train. I took it to the main train station, and then took a bus to my hotel. That was easy, too. I found Munich public transportation very traveler friendly.
I will be curious to see the answers as we will face this question next year, coming from the west coast too. I have used the Lufthansa bus before, but as far as I know it only makes two stops, Munich North and the Hauptbahnhof. You would have to taxi or underground from there. According to the airport website, the S8 bahn goes to Marienplatz in 38 minutes. That sounds pretty OK to me.
It is your personal preference. Depends a little bit on how adventuresome you are, amount of luggage, etc., and if you are willing to pay the price. There is no right answer. We always take public transit but we basically cheap. Of course, that contributes to why we have been able to spend nearly a year in Europe over the 18 years or so.
The Lufthansa bus makes one stop near Englischer Garten on it's way to the Munich Hbf. If you are going to Marienplatz, it is probably not the way to go. Taxis are very expensive and not necessarily faster. I'd take the S-Bahn, as it avoids traffic. I always use the S-Bahn when I arrive in Munich. When you get to the S-Bahn station at the airport (from Terminal 2), the S8 (direction Herrsching) leaves from track 2, on the left, and goes into Munich from the east. S1 (direction Ostbahnhof) leaves on track 1, on the right, and goes into Munich from the west. Whichever one you take will get to the Marienplatz station first. Howerever, although the S1 leaves sooner, it takes longer and only gets to Marienplatz 1 minute sooner.
I was in Munich last week, and until 20th August the S-Bahn through tunnel through central Munich is CLOSED on Saturdays and Sundays. So if you're travelling at a weekend soon, you should get a taxi or the Lufthansa bus.
Philip: good post.
Last I checked, a cab from the airport to downtown was more then 50 Euro. The Lufthansa bus stops in Munich at the Hauptbahnhof and at Nordfriedhof. From either stop, you must take the U-Bahn to Marienplatz. The S-Bahn closures will only affect you on the weekends until August 20. According to the MVV (Munich metro) website, "On the Munich suburban main line between Pasing and Ostbahnhof (Munich East) is no service on the weekends from 6 July to 20 August 2012. The closure of the track is from Friday 7.30 p.m to Monday 4 a.m. Rail replacement buses operate between Pasing and Ostbahnhof (Munich East) every 3 to 5 minutes. Valid MVV-tickets will be accepted on all rail replacement buses." Here is the map of the S-/U-Bahn in the MVV. You can take the S1 to Moosach and change there to the U3 to Marienplatz. Moosach to Marienplatz takes 19 min and the train runs every 10 min.
