Munich airport & the city

I will land in Munich October 29th at 12:25pm and fly to Athens at 7:35pm. Does anyone have any suggestions on something interesting to do during this long layover? It will be me, my husband & 15 y/o son and we have never been to Germany, all we have is this layover.
Thanks for your suggestions!

The Airbrau Biergarten is located in the Airport. It has a nice outdoor area and would make a great lunch spot. You could make a very short trip to downtown and walk around the Marienplatz for a couple hours.

Definitely take the short train ride from the airport to the Marienplatz and also walk around the Viktualienmarkt. It will be vastly interesting to you since you've never been to Germany. It will probably make you wish you had scheduled more time in the area. Germany is a great place to visit and Munich is one of my favorite destinations.

Will you be checking luggage straight thru to Athens, or will you have to claim it in Munich? If you can check it straight thru and have minimal hand luggage, and you don't arrive hours late, you should certainly try to get into town. With only immigration (passport check) to go through, I have always been to the S-Bahn station at the airport within an hour of landing. At best, the S8 gets to Marienplatz in 38 min. Even if you just miss a train, including the wait, the next S-Bahn will get you to Marienplatz within an hour. That will still give you two hours to look around and make the ~1 hr trip back with a 2 hr leeway before your flight. Buy a ticket from the automat on the platform. Choose a "Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte" for 20,00€. That will cover all three of you for all conveyances for the entire day in the Munich metro district. In Marienplatz, you can see the Neues Rathaus (city hall) and Frauenkirche (church with the green cupolas). As mentioned above, the Vikualienmarkt (farmers market) is only a few yards from Marienplatz. Or, you might want to spend any time left window shopping in the pedestrian mall (Fußgangerzone) to the west of Marienplatz.
