I got a great, relatively cheap ticket from Charlotte, NC to Prague via Munich. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it comes with a 7-hour layover in Munich. Is there a 4hour-ish trip I could take into Munich that would not be too strenuous (I am sure to be jet lagged) so that I can see some of this city? Thanks!
It sounds like yo are traveling alone. Find the S-Bahn station. Buy a Gesamtnetz Tageskarte at the automat for €11. That will cover your RT into Munich. Take either S-Bahn to Marienplatz. That's kind of the heart of Munich. Tour Frauenkirche. That's the church with the green cupolas. Eat at the Neues Rathaus or find the Hofbräuhaus. Stroll the pedestrian zone.
You have enough time to see the highlights, starting at Marienplatz. The Frauenkirche is cool from the outside but one of the most bare on the inside. Poke your head in, but make sure you hit the Michaelskirche - where the tomb of some of the Wittlesbachs are, including "Mad" King Ludwig II, then running over to Peterskirche, which has a full-body relic (i.e. skeleton!) of a minor saint from the Roman times. I'd stop at the Hofbrauhaus for a beer, but not food (it's overpriced and mediocre) and then hit the Vitukalenmarkt (I'm not spelling that anywhere near correct, sorry!) for a quick stand-up bite - try Leberkaese (kinda like German spam, but delicious!) or a Stadtbratwurst in a roll. If you're moving at a decent clip you could do all this within 2-3 hours, as these sites are only within blocks of each other.
