Munich airport area hotels

On an upcoming trip to Bavaria, we will need to stay reasonably close to the Munich airport to catch a 9 a.m. Monday flight. Before departing, we plan to spend a couple of nights in the city and move out to the airport area on Sunday. We want to avoid airport hotels, if possible, due to their high cost, boxiness and limited access to everything but the airport. Is Freising a good place to stay on the night before our departure? Would it be a good home base for day trips into Munich? Are there other options I have not considered?

Freising would be an excellent place to spend the last night before going to the airport. As for using it as a home base for day trips into Munich, I'm not sure it is much less expensive than downtown and the trip by S-Bahn to the Hbf takes 40 min. You could buy a Partner Gesamtnetz (entire Munich metro) Tageskarte (day ticket) for the train in and out of Munich and all your travel in downtown. That would cost you €18 for up to five people.

Hi Roy,

Agree that Freising is a good choice. We also like Erding very much. We stayed at and can recommend the Park Hotel (Best Western) in Erding. It's 2 blocks from the train station and the old town of Erding is just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Erding is also on the end of an S-Bahn line that goes into town. Freising to the Hbf takes 43 min; Erding to the Hbf takes 50 min. However, the time to Marienplatz is about equal. Both trips need a 3 zone ticket for €6,90 pP one way. For either, a Gesamtnetz Partner Tageskarte (€18) will work.

For getting to the airport, the direct bus trip from Freising takes 21 min and costs €2,30 per person. The one change trip from Erding takes 39-44 min and costs €4,60 pP. If it matters, the first bus from Erding gets to the airport at 4:36; the first bus from Freising get there at 3:06.
