Munich Accommodation during Oktoberfest

Not knowing Oktoberfest starts from Sept. 18 thru Oct. 4 (ignorance on my part), I booked my return flight to US from Munich on Sept. 27 at 7:00 AM. Now, I can’t find accommodation for one night at a reasonable price and what I find is very expensive. Can someone help me with 1) any leads on budget accommodation near the city centre 2) what time train service to airport start in the morning 3) is it possible to hang out at the Munich airport at night for early morning flight. Thanks.

You can hang out in the Munich train station - at least when I was last there. I've done it outside of Oktoberfest, and have friends who have done it during without too much trouble.

I wish you luck finding cheap rates during Oktoberfest. When I was there in '99 they waned $100.00 US to sleep in the 60 person hostel room near the station.

I booked my 2008 Oktoberfest room for 3 nights in late July from this site: http://www.checkin-muenchen.de. The place I booked was far from the city center but a 5 minute walk from the u-bahn. I believe I paid about 80 euro a night. Good luck.

Try Hotel zur Gred in Freising. www.hotelzurgred.de

Freising is a cute little village, walk from hotel to bus stop about 5 minutes, bus to Munich airport about 15 minutes. It is great for a flight out of Munich. We stayed there on Oct 7 last year, just after Oktoberfest (we didn't attend- were in Italy) We paid 84 Euro for a triple room with breakfast.

Hotel is fine. We requested a private bath and confirmed the reservation, then when we arrived the owner said he was "all out of private baths". I wasn't happy about that! I was also concerned at a slight cigarette smell in the hotel (I'm picky), but it really did turn out ok. Room was clean, breakfast good, nice owner. I'd stay again, but I'd make sure I got a private bath...somehow.

Zur Gred is increasing their prices €10 per room (a DZ will be €88) on Sept 1. However, there are other, less expensive, accommodations in Freising (www.freising.de).

I also know of a hotel in the eastern suburbs, two blocks from an S-Bahn station. They show the cost of a room with 2 twin beds at €74 per night and it doesn't look like they increase the price for Oktoberfest. It takes about an hour from there to the airport and the first S-Bahn connection arrives just before 6 AM. However, they don't speak any English and don't want customers who can't speak German.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. I tried all your suggestions with no success. Either they don't have accommodations or some of them require minimum three nights stay. I have decided to go to the airport and take my chances.

not sure if they require a certain number of nights or not, but I just booked a hotel in Augsburg (~45 min away) for 43 euros a night for a double room. Hotel Jakoberhof (http://jakoberhof.de/). It's a bit more train riding, but would be more comfortable than the airport!

One year I looked at spending my last night in Landshut before flying out of Munich. Unfortunately you are flying out very early Sunday morning. There is a bus from the Landshut train station to the airport that leaves at 4am and will get you to the airport at 4:48.

From: Landshut
To: MUC

I was told by a hotel in Landshut that the city has a fixed taxi fare to the airport of 45 euros. That was two years ago.

As I was walking through the Munich airport to catch a 6:50am flight, I saw a number of travelers sleeping in Terminal 1, just inside the doors from the outdoor central area. It seemed to be part of an open area belonging to a rental car agency. There are restrooms nearby, and somewhere in the airport are showers. Sleeping in an airport is not something I would consider, but if you feel it is your only option, those cushions looked very comfortable. You might also research whether MUC has any policy regarding travelers who stay through the night.
