Our family of five will be ending a three week trip in Munich and are looking for a place to stay for one night relatively near the airport. Does anyone have any suggestions for a comfortable place to stay/explore on foot? Thank you-
Freising is the closest town to the airport. You can stay at Hotel Zur Gred (www.hotelzurgred.de) and take the S-Bahn or a short bus ride to the airport in the morning. Freising is the home of Weihenstephen brewery, the oldest still operating brewery in the world.
If you don't want to spend the night in Munich chose Erding, a quaint and picturesque Bavarian town close to the airport. Check with hrs.com for good rates.
"chose Erding, a quaint and picturesque Bavarian town close to the airport"
Can I assume the town is the namesake for the wonderful Erdinger beer?
Yes, it is. In Germany it's almost always like that: Name of town + ending -er = brand name of the local beer. In Bavaria sometimes it's also name of monastery that invented that very beer, like Paulaner Monastery inveted Paulaner beer and the Andechser monks created Andechser beer. By the way: Erdinger Weißbier alcohol free is an isotonic beverage with a very, very low percentage of alcohol (below 0.5%) and less calories than a Coke.
Weihenstephan is also the only place where you can get an official 4 years degree in beer brewing which Mr. Gordon and Mr. Biersch from Las Vegas did.
I didn't think they were planning to stay that long.
Hi Shellie,
We stayed at the Best Western Park Hotel in Erding. Excellent hotel and a great town to spend your last night in Germany. The "old town" is just a 5 minute walk from the hotel and the train station is just down the street. The airport is less than 20 minutes from here.
Paul
Lee,
Did you mean Shellie, Gordon & Biersch or both?
You don't have to stay near the airport just because you have a flight the next morning. The Munich underground will get you easily and quickly directly into the airport from all over the city. If you want to have a fun time and see a little of downtown Munich then stay near the Marienplatz or the Viktualienmarkt. There's an underground stop right at the Marienplatz.
Should you decide to stay in Munich to catch a few highlights on your last day, you may wish to consider Hotel Uhland. It’s about a 10 minute walk to the Munchen Hauptbahnhof…S trains to airport in 45 minutes. It’s a 20 minute walk to Marienplatz. This is a nice hotel with good rates on a really quiet street…ranked number 4 on Tripadvisor.
Our family of 5 stayed at the Hotel Advokat, which has a 2 BR apartment on the top floor. It was a short walk to the Deutsches Museum, Alt Stadt and the Viktualienmarkt. The kids loved it. They had a beautiful breakfast, too. Check it out.
Downtown Munich is 40 minutes from the airport by S-bahn trains (3 per hour). The center of town(Marienplatz) is an outdoor pedestrian-only shopping mall. You could also rent bikes and tour the Englische Garten.
