My friend is meeting us in Garmisch and needs explicit help! She arrives in Munich and needs to catch the train to Garmisch. It appears that she will need to get on a train to Pasling and then transfer to Garmisch Parken (pls confirm the names of the train stations as well). She's getting nervous since she's by herself and I won't be able to help her from where we'll be at in our trip. Thanks!
OK, first, the rail interchange west of Munich is called Pasing and the Garmisch station is Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GaP). There is a main "trunk" line through Munich with stops for the major trains at Pasing, Hbf, and Ost Bhf. The S-Bahn from the airport to the Hbf meets this trunk line at Laim, one stop (outbound) before Pasing and it's only an S-Bahn stop, not a train stop. To catch the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at Pasing, you would have to get off at Laim and catch one of the S-Bahns from Laim to Pasing. And from what I see on the Bahn schedule, you wouldn't save any time doing this. Confused. Just go all the way into the Hbf and catch the train to GaP from there. If she buys a Bayern-Ticket (€21 for one person) at the airport, it will cover all of her travel by S-Bahn from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof and from there by regional train to GaP. When she gets off of the S-Bahn at Hauptbahnhof (tief), while still in the mall over the S-Bahn tracks, she should look for and follow signs for Gleis 27-36. For help from the airport, just see my webpage.
