Hi - After a short trip in Alsace, we are dropping off our rental car in Mulhouse, Fr, and need to get to the train station in Basel, Switz. Does anyone know the easiest way to do that? And how much time to allow? Thank you, Sally
There are 3-4 regional trains/hour between Mulhouse Ville and Basel SBB. Depending upon the number of stops, the ride takes 20-30 minutes.
Thank you, Tim. Are there any issues with clearing customs?
Sally, I doubt that you'll have any issues with "clearing Customs" in Basel. Last time I was through there (coming from France), it looked like all the Passport control booths were closed. As I recall, the main station in Basel has two parts. One part is used for the regional trains (where my train from France arrived), and the other part for the high speed trains (where my next train departed). If you're going to be connecting with a high speed train, you'll need to go up the stairs and along the walkway until you get to the stairs leading down to your departure platform. One other point to mention. The only washrooms provided in the Basel station (that I could find) were pay facilities operated by McClean. These were very clean and well organized but the automated turnstiles ONLY accepts Swiss Francs. If you only have Euros, you're "out of luck". Happy travels!
If you are dropping the car off at Mulhouse to avoid drop fees in Switzerland why not drop off at the Basel airport which is actually in France. Mt memory is that there are desks deemed to be in Switzerland and others deemed to be in France. It might be worth checking it out... Then you can hop the number 50 bus straight into town.,.. maybe?
"Are there any issues with clearing customs?" Switzerland is now a member of the Schengen zone, so the only border controls of any sort that still exist are the checks along the autobahn to see if the cars have the proper vignette sticker.
Thank you ever so much!! All excellent info.
