Just wanted to thank everyone on this board who recommended we stay in Muerren when visiting Bernese Oberland. It was the most amazing place to stay and now that I've been there I can see that for us it was by far the best of all the options I was considering (Muerren, Wengen, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen). So thank you to all the folks who gave me such great advice!
KT I agree completely with your sentiment. Interlaken, too remote. Wengen, too low - but looks neat from Mürren, especially on the walk to Grütschalp
Lauterbrunnen, too busy, too many motor vehicles Mürren - everything needed for a pleasant stay, a suoermarket, several restaurants, a pool, even minigolf. And the views. And the walks. And the views. Not too crowded, but plenty going on. Thanks to those who recommended Denise at Chalet Fontana, and RS for the Jungfrau Hotel. Need to get back soon. Thanks for the memories, KT.
We are interested in staying in Muerren instead of Lauterbrunnen, but we aren't sure if it would work for us. What do you do with your rental car if you stay there? ( I am under the impression you can't drive to Muerren, but must take a train.).......Can you take a 26inch suitcase on the train? (Please spare me the lectures about carry-on only, we know what works for our travel style.) Thank you for any help.
Glad you were so happy with Murren! We love it there. I recommend it all the time but it's hard to put into words how amazing it is. You just have to experience it for yourself - glad you did! Cynthia, you could park your car in Lauterbrunnen and take the cable car (or whatever it's called) up. Any size suitcase is fine.
Cynthia You could take a steamer trunk if you could fit it in your car. You have two choices to get from your rental car to Mürren. We prefer to park in the covered multi-storey car park across the street from the train station and cable car station in Lauterbrunnen. It costs something like €9 a day. You take a ticket on entry and pay at the end. Elevator up to the 7th floor, and walk along the tunnel under the road and train station. Buy your ticket, and if your luggage is too big for the passenger cabin of the cable car it can travel underneath with the freight. Unless it really is a steamer trunk you will be able to take it in the gondola. The capacity of the gondola is something like 100 people, almost all standing. So up the escalator you go then its a level entry into the gondola. Hold on, and up you go. At the upper station at Grütschalp you get off the cable car and walk a few feet to the train. If you don't want to lift up your luggage into the train - just one car - it can travel on the trailer. You do need to arrange that with the staff. Then at Mürren if you can't do the stairs up from the train station platform you can go the other way, following the wheelchair symbols, and have a ramp. = = The other way is park at the outside lot at the cable car station near Stechelberg. Same drill with the cable car. Up, much more steeply and scenically, to the first cable car station at Gimmelwald, off and walk a dozen feet or so onto the next cable car which goes to the other end of the village of Mürren from the train. Pretty easy, really, either way. It is well described in the RS Switzerland Guidebook.
