Mt. st. Michel strike update

Does anyone know the status of the recent workers strike at Mt St Michel in France? Is it over? If not, how does it impact visitors? Thanks! B

It adds uncertainty to the visit, that's for sure. We visited MSM on July 13th while the strike was still going on. We had trouble getting current info on the state of the strike before our visit. I don't know if the strike is still going or not. Right before our visit I was reading that on some days the abbey was being closed by the strike, but on others the abbey was open during the day (but with shorter hours) and they weren't charging admission, but no audio guides were available. When we arrived on July 13th in the late afternoon (around 4:00 or 4:30), the crowds were sure there, so the strike didn't impact the crowds. Fortunately we learned that the nighttime visits that they provide during July and August were going to be available on the day were there, for which they charged the normal admission price. We did the nightime visit, and it was wonderful! So we ended up not being impacted by the strike, other than the worry we endured ahead of time because we didn't know what to expect.

According to French press accounts, the workers voted on July 16th to end their strike. They succeeded in obtaining for the workers and inhabitants of the Mont special dedicated shuttles (different from the tourist buses) that will take them straight to the base of the mont. the local authorities are running a trial that started July 22 that will go through Oct. 22; after assessing that, they'll determine the regular schedule that they will establish for the locals' shuttle.

Hi folks, just thought I'd let you know that I just left Mt. st. Michel this morning and everything seems to be operating as normal. There was one protest banner hanging outside the window of what looked to be someone's residence but all the entrances and shops were operating as normal. The crowds are still simply awful but following Rick's advice of arriving in early evening, staying on the mountain and leaving as the tour groups descend in the morning worked well. Brenda
