Many folks recommend spending the night on MSM to avoid the crowds and enhance the experience. Any recommendations/experience on places to stay on the island. We prefer clean/basic in the 100 euro range. thx.
If that's your budget I think you may have to stay across the causeway in Pontorson. I haven't priced things recently though.
We stayed at the Le Muton Blanc (the white sheep) in 2009 and they currently list doubles at 99euro on up. Give them a try. http://www.lemoutonblanc.fr/en/hotel-mont-saint-michel We payed double that, but our room was for a family of 5 (and quite nice - like a little apartment, but without a kitchen) It's definitely worthwhile to spend the night. We were there in early July and they were just starting a special series of evening tours of the abbey (complete with a smoke machine for added atmosphere :). I loved it. Considering the difficulty of the setting, the abbey is amazing. (PS; I have fond memories of family reunions at the YMCA Of The Rockies in Estes Park)
Thanks Randy, Yes, the Y is quite popular. I have heard that same story countless times. The Y and Estes Park are priceless in summer!
We stayed overnight April 21 for 80 euros plus a small tax, would have been 70 but it was Saturday night. It was clean, tiny, basic, one of about four rooms under a restaurant. I would not call it a hotel. There is a rental agency near the entrance which handled lodging for several different hotels or rooms. Poke around on the internet to see what's available. The email responses to my requests were quite prompt. Or stay nearby on land, but remain on the island after the crowds leave. We loved our dinner at the Hotel Du Guesclin (18 euros for three courses, one of our favorite meals of the month in France), enjoy the lights later at night, and then drive back to your lodging off-island. People did clear out by five or six o'clock when it got cold! Marian, Kirkland WA
