L'Atelier by Jean Luc Rabinel in Arles. One of the best meals I have ever had anywhere!

Le Criquet in Arles - went there 2 nights in a row because of their tagliatelles aux moules et aux herbes and salade petitie poulpes. The food was outstanding! All through our meal, groups of locals in Arlesian (is there such a word?) dress paraded to the Arena. We kept jumping up to take pictures and were told to follow one of the bands after we ate, for a free festival involving dancing, drumming, and amazing horsemanship in the Arena. What a night! Darling servers who didn't speak much English so we practiced our very limited French - one of them stopped us in town on the day we were leaving and wished us bon voyage. Definitely the most memorable meal.

Sounds absolutely wonderful! Magical moments on a trip... Great that both are in Arles. This is our 20th, so will try!

Easy one, although I have had many, many great meals in the south of France. Oustau de Baumaniere. Flawless, but pricey. Go to website. At Les Baux. Of course you don't need to spend a lot to eat well in that part of the world. If you are into collecting Michelin stars, go to Michelin site. Again, not necessary to spend a lot, but you should try for at least one big splurge on a trip to France. Oustau is my unqualified recommendation. It has been around for a while. I was last there 4 years ago. Hope it is still as great as ever. Bon voyage et bon appetit!

My very favorite meal ever in France was in Sablet, near Avignon and the rhone wine area. It is called Les Abeilles (the bees) and is run by the gentleman who used to run a great restaurant in Gigondas. This restaurant is a big favorite of Patricia Wells and here is the website.

We have also had fantastic meals in Segurat at La Mesclun--wonderful. Another favorite is on the road between Sablet and Segurat, but I can't remember the name. It is a vineyard, B&B and we have eaten there many times and have loved them all.

Good eating!
