Most Amazing Breads?

We will be travelling from Paris through Germany to Prague on a river cruise starting next week, stopping in various towns along the way. My fiance could literally live on bread and I mean bread alone :-) Any suggestions for good bakeries or types of breads to try in Paris, Trier, Cochem/Koblenz,Rudesheim, Miltenberg, Wurzburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg and/or Prague. Thanks in advance...I hope to surprise him with some great ideas. Thanks again!

Jil, this is not technically bread, but in Bamberg you have to try their Bamberger Hoernla(dialect for Hoernchen, or croissant). They are so buttery they melt in your mouth, best just plain with nothing on them. You can get them at any 'Fuchs'(fox) bakery, there are quite a few throughout the city, or at 'Marktbeck' in the Langestrasse. They also have the Bretzen (pretzels) that someone else mentioned in the other thread. I have those nearly every day for breakfast.
In Nuernberg since it is nearly the season you might want to try their famous Lebkuchen, or gingerbread. There are mainly varieties, my favorite is the chocolate covered with the oblaten base. These would make good gifts also as they travel well or will ship.

Hi Christina, Thank you so very much for your suggestions and for the locations of where to get these delectable croissants you described :-) We will be in both Bamberg and Nuremberg for the better part of a day, maybe more, and we will certainly search them out. I am the pretzel person so I will be excited to try pretzels in Germany.

The pretzels in German are a main staple of bread for all meals particularly in Baveria, which might include Nuremberg. Each area has their own type of pretzel. They are best if you slice them in half so you have a top and a bottom and then butter them with sweet butter. The combination of butter and salt if soooo good together. You can also add more calories to the whole pretzel by adding honey on top of the butter.
Mmmmm!

Every cooking author I have ever read says that La Poillane Bakery on Rue de Cherch Midi is the world's best bread. We went this year and I agree. Try the cafe/bar next door that serves tartines on the famous bread. Absolutely delicious and the formula was a great deal, taste and price wise.
